Jackie Cooper - 1922-2011

From MSN.com;
Former child actor Jackie Cooper passed away on Tuesday in a Beverly
Hills hospital, his family has announced. He was 88.

Cooper, who was featured in Hal Roach's "Our Gang" series, became the
youngest actor to ever be nominated for*a Best Actor Academy Award, when he
was nominated at the age of 9 for his work in the 1931 film "Skippy."

In later years, Cooper served as a VP of program development for Columbia
Pictures' Screen Gems division. He also worked behind the screen as a director,
and won two Emmy Awards for directing work on "M*A*S*H*" and "The White Shadow."

As an actor, Cooper experienced renewed fame as gruff newspaper editor Perry
White in the "Superman" film series of the late '70s and early '80s. He
announced his retirement in 1989.

Born John Cooper Jr. in Los Angeles in 1922, he was married three times, to
June Horne from 1944 to 1949; to Hildy Parks from 1950 to 1951; and to Barbara
Kraus from 1954 until her passing in 2009.

In all, Cooper had four children, though he outlived*his two daughters,
Julie and Cristina. Cooper is survived by sons John and Russell.

Loved him as Perry White. I wasn't aware of all of his earlier success.

He had a good run.

I was just checking out 'The Champ' the other day. A classic.

He was terrific in that at what, 8 years old?

Re: Jackie Cooper - 1922-2011

I grew up with John Hamilton as Perry White- a sometimes gruff, more often than not grandfatherly figure. When the Donner film hit the screen, I was not expecting a younger Perry White channeled via Jimmy Cagney but that turned out to be a brilliant stroke. From that point on, the image of Jackie Cooper (at least in the first film) became my ideal for that character and it's going to hard to get in synch with anyone else in the role- even moreso than either Reeve or any of the various Lois's through the years.

He was having a great run in the 70s with a lot of directing gigs in addition to this, but by the time Superman IV rolled around in 1987, he was looking elderly to me. Not much of a surprise he would retire soon after.

Anyways, Thank You Sir for giving me some of my favorite moments in one of my favorite films.
r.i.p.

Remember him well from the Our Gang shorts, even though he only did about a dozen of them. One of the last few remaining.

And of course, he was a great choice for Perry White.

I read his autobiography a long time ago. He said to get him to cry on camera they would threaten to kill his dog, hence the title of the book "Please Don't Shoot My Dog"

Re: Jackie Cooper - 1922-2011

Jackie has a place of honor in my family room--I have a huge framed vintage Our Gang poster (I think it's 30x40). Just re-watched Superman the other day with the kids, and I told them how he had been a child star. Weird.
