David O. Russell to Direct Russ Meyer Biopic
I know there are plenty of Meyer fans on this board (myself included) who might find this interesting...

I've been meaning to read the McDonough biography for some time. Now to speculate on casting: I vote Philip Seymour Hoffman to portray Meyer collaborator Roger Ebert.

EXCLUSIVE: Fox Searchlight is negotiating to acquire a pitch package for The Fighter helmer David O. Russell to direct a feature about Russ Meyer, the maker of exploitation B-movies like Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! and Super Vixens. The script will be written by Merritt Johnson. Formerly Russell's assistant on Three Kings, Johnson co-wrote the celebrated HBO telepic Temple Grandin and scripted Lovelace, the pic about Deep Throat star Linda Lovelace and her manipulative husband Chuck Traynor. That film has James Franco and Kate Hudson circling the leads and Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman directing.
The deal to tell the Meyer story is being hashed out, and part of it involves getting rights to the Jimmy McDonough book Big Bosoms And Square Jaws: The Biography Of Russ Meyer, King Of The Sex Film. Meyer began plying his trade in exploitation fare in the early 1960s, as the country was loosening up and the sexual revolution was getting under way. His trademark: placing buxom actresses in grindhouse fare that he wrote, directed, produced and even distributed. To say his casts were well rounded would be an understatement. He owned almost all of his films and as a result died wealthy at age 82 in 2004. CAA is repping the package.

James Franco and Kate Hudson???? You've gotta be kiddin' me. A film like this requires some real larger-than-life star personalities. And someone with some seasoning.

Here are some comments the director made recently about this biopic:

Meyer and Ebert are like the Sopranos in some ways, but they have great taste, and they have a sense of justice. I would love to do this with Mark Wahlberg, Robert De Niro, and a couple of hot women, it could be very thrilling.
It'll be centered around a family, and I like the combination of criminals and truth. These guys they're tough but they're working on this crazy film, and they can't do it without truth. I think that's cool.

That's what I was thinking when I first heard about this. I've got the Arrow box (which has great extras), but the PAL to NTSC of FPKK with my DVD player is horrible. I have no idea why the owner of his films isn't doing anything with them in the US, so maybe this will be the prodding they need.

David O. Russell? Given how on the mark he was with his Uncharted ideas, I bet this'll be a movie about a bunch of A-cup women who work at a bus token booth who enjoy reading Sylvia Plath novels.

Good the hear.
I'm holding out hope that Lindsay Lohan will make her triumphant screen comeback playing Edy Williams.

Actually If you re-read that deadline story... Franco and Hudson are being considered for the Linda Lovelace film, not for the Russ Meyer biopic.

Re: David O. Russell to Direct Russ Meyer Biopic
Here's my comment on the story:
Fox Searchlight Allegedly Eyeing David O Russell for Russ Meyer Biopic
Long story short: This concerns me for a number of reasons, but done right, it could be awesome. Hoffman is a perfect choice for Ebert (I even posted that in my article), and I think John Goodman is the perfect Meyer, that is dream casting.
Any notion of bringing DeNiro or Wahlberg in is completely retarded, they have no place in Meyer's world. Those comments from Russell are very troubling because it looks to me like he's heading in completely the wrong direction with this one.
Oh, and for the guy wondering about why we haven't seen better editions of Meyer's films, there is a long and very ugly story about that, and one that I hope the movie doesn't tap.
