House Party (Hudlin, 1990)

IMDB | Release Date: 9 March 1990

<hr>

You may snicker for a second, but I think this is one of the better comedies of the 1990s (second only to Friday in the subgenre).

I was surprised the film showed (and won) at Sundance, and was based on the director's Harvard film thesis. Hudlin recently directed a Modern Family episode.

Anyone else a fan of this?

(And, for the record, I'm not so keen on the sequels).

In with the obligatory Smith quote:

"Man, this is going to make 'House Party', look like 'House Party 2!'"
"Or 'House Party 3!'"
"Shut the fuck up!"

I only know of Hudlin as The Boondocks has torn him a brand new asshole on numerous occasions during his tenure as the president of BET.

I used to watch this every time it was on cable in the 90's. Classic from start to finish.

I'm a fan!

"Hey, boy...get down here and eat this shit before it gets cold!!"
"Uh, it'd help if you didn't call it shit"

Robin Harris was a riot in that movie

I love House Party, but I think Class Act is their funniest flick.

Re: House Party (Hudlin, 1990)

I remember owning all three House Partys on VHS and having a VHS recording of Class Act off cable. Class Act is still a guilty pleasure.

At the time I loved every one of them. Ahh...youth...

Loved this movie just for Robin Harris alone. That guy was extremely funny. It's too bad his life was cut short because he was definitely on to bigger things. I remember seeing this movie with my parents and the theater was full with people drinking, smoking, talking and probably sexing it up. I still have the soundtrack to this movie on tape.

Same here.

It's been a while since I've seen it, but I always liked House Party. Can't remember much about the sequels though. Class Act is good too. I remember it playing on HBO over and over sometime back in the early 90's.

Yeah, I remember watching this and Class Act a lot on HBO as a kid; we used to always say that line, when they're running through the neighbor's house and the lady goes, "Have some chicken baby."

And Bebe's Kids was great because of Robin Harris.

I loved me some House Party back in the day, but I don't think I've seen it since it hit VHS.

Sadly, my best recollections of the series are from the Pajama Jammy Jam.

Yeah, I love both too. I think I saw HP2, but I don't remember anything about it. Were Kid n Play even in HP3? The act had a short shelf life, but it was fun while it lasted.

Wore out the tapes to the House Party and House Party 2 soundtracks! Liked 2 slightly better because I was a New Jack head back in the day. Me and my boy Dante perfected the "Kid n Play kick step" to impress the females.

"Ain't gonna hurt nobody" is still a damn fun tune. Heard it awhile back on Sirius and just could not wipe the grin off my face.

Indeed it is. Not many people gravitated towards K-n-P's "fun/party" hip hop but their first two albums are classics. Gettin' Funky always got the crowd hype.

Just heard Kid Vs. Play on Sirius not too long ago.....made me want to watch the flick again. Used to own it on VHS years ago.

Just realized that the picture in the OP with Play shushing us and covering Kid's mouth is really from Class Act, not House Party.

Oh, okay. I thought since Class Act was about their big secret, then that's what it was from.

Re: House Party (Hudlin, 1990)

I was just talking about this movie on St. Patty's Day. My friends didn't know who Kid 'n Play were and had never seen any of the House Party movies. For shame! I love this movie, even if it's kinda lame by today's standards.
