Just sounds like you're an old fuck, Ash.

Also... I got excited thinking we had some news on that longer and better cut.

Quote: I've always had mixed feelings about this film. I thought the child actors were much better cast than the adult actors. I saw it when the New York Film Festival premiered the longer cut back in 1984. And I have the long cut on a two-tape VHS edition from Warner Home Video and I'm sure I've seen that at least once. But I don't know about another 40 minutes. It just gets harder and harder for me to sit through long movies. I walked out of THE MASTER at the two-hour mark because I just couldn't take it anymore. I had to force myself to sit through all of THE GREAT GATSBY (two-and-a-half-hours) but it took a great deal of effort. And it was no fun.

The same for home viewing. When I watched HEAVEN'S GATE (the long cut) on VHS last year, it took a whole afternoon to get through it (I can't remember the exact number of hours it took). It was a chore. When I watched both parts of RED CLIFF (John Woo's cut) four years ago, it took an entire Sunday (12 noon to 9:30 PM) to get through a five hour running time. At a certain point, the discomfort just undermines the enjoyment of it. (I know, I should have watched the second part on another day.) In contrast, I watched a two-and-a-half-hour movie at home yesterday that just happened to be a great movie (MARIE ANTOINETTE, 1938) and one I'd never seen before--and I was engrossed throughout. I did have to take a couple of bathroom breaks and a snack break during it, but my energy level held up because I started early and it wasn't TOO long. But if it had been a three-hour movie, it would have been a little harder.

This is why I like anime TV series (shorter goals--you can choose to watch one, two, three, or four episodes in one sitting, depending on your energy level and approach of mealtimes) and kung fu movies (average length: 90 minutes).

And this from a guy who used to sit through 9 hours of Clint Eastwood westerns when Times Square theaters ran quadruple bills of the "Man with No Name" trilogy (speaking of Leone) and HANG 'EM HIGH.
It all sepends on the movie. If a movie is good it does not feel long because you are absorbed by it. Not long ago I saw 2 movies that were long, 1900 (5hrs & 17 min) & Alexander (3hrs & 34 min). 1900 was so good it felt like a 2 hour movie while Alexander was so crappy it felt like a 10 hour movie. I have seen Once Upon in America 3 times and it does not feel like it is 3 hrs & 49 min. For me it feels shorter because of it's excellence.

Oh and by the way The Master is IMO right up there with There Will Be Blood as PTA's best film.

I heard there was a longer version and even though I loved the original long version I would buy a new dvd cut of this movie. I didn't like the flashbacks and if the new footage would fix that up. Like the movie ends on a flashback of DeNiro.

"Who are you people and where is my horse?"

I gotta remember that one at the next family gathering.

My years long search for the short version finally resulted in locating a copy of the VHS release on Ebay yesterday. I just about gave up on this title, since the short version is so obscure, and I've never run across a copy at various used media stores or Ebay, despite keeping an eye out for it. So since I hadn't looked up the title in quite some time. I did a simple search through the VHS section, and my jaw dropped when I saw the single copy of the short version available for only $7 with free shipping. It wasn't even listed as the short version or anything. So I just had to take a chance at viewing the auction since the box pictured looked smaller than the others and just 'different'. And sure enough, it's the one tape 139 minute U.S. version!

I remember seeing the shorter cut on cable many years ago. I had seen the longer cut already at the time, so all I remember about the shorter cut is scenes were shown in a different, more chronological order and made the movie seem disjointed. The different scenes in the shorter cut just didn't flowed together very well.

I didn't think it was confusing, though, maybe because I had seen the longer cut and already knew the story.

Me, too. Just out of curiosity. Watching the extended cut last night I can't imagine that a linear edit would make as much sense. Events in the different time periods provide explanation and context that a linear edit wouldn't (not nearly as well).

But I finally watched this extended, "Director's Cut." I've seen the 229 minute version from the 2 disc DVD about a decade ago, but I hadn't watched this version until now.

I heard all about the color desaturization, etc, etc, on the Blu Ray. Supposedly, this was done in part to make the inserted (previously lost) footage less jarring. The desaturated color isn't bad. It's not like it barely looks like a color movie. The colors are actually somewhat more realistic this way. It doesn't look bad at all. The inserted footage? Looks like crap. Awful. I'm 100% sure that a frame by frame digital/computerized restoration could have made it better. But DAMN, that would be time consuming and expensive. And it still wouldn't look as good as the rest of the movie.

That extra footage - mostly dialogue and character development - makes this an even better movie. Don't forget, Leone filmed 10 hours worth of stuff for this one! He wanted to do a 6 hour, 2 part cut (told over two movies). I'm sure that would have been amazing. Sadly, I suspect all that footage is gone.

But if you like (or love) this movie, the extra footage really is good (aside from the picture quality issues).

This movie is a masterpiece. I had forgotten just how great it is.

i fucking love this movie when i first saw it. it was and is a masterpiece. i have yet to see the extended cut due to it's daunting run time, but i can't wait and has been in and out of my queue several times. i feel it is a Leone film that gets overlooked bc he is so known for his westerns, but this is a gangster classic.
