Thoughts on 'The Crying Game' (1992)?

I just watched this after being told to by people because they thought it was amazing, I didnt like it as much as they did but it is admirable. Jordan does do a good job both as writer and director, and manages to elevate it above just a 'fiml with a twist'

I though Stephen Rea was tremendous in the lead role, a conflicted man. I do think the most overrated aspect of this film is Jaye Davidson though, people said this was the standout performance in the film, and the performance was certainly good in some scenes particularly leading up to the twist, but overall I found the performance to be rather flat. Plus the 'emotional' part of Dil just came across as forced to me and not very genuine, which I felt really showed the inexperience in the acting. I think it was the role that cause the fascination and got the Oscar nomination more than the acting, in my opinion.

As you can tell from the username, Im glad the Academy went for Eastwood's superior Unforgiven and Hackman for Supporting Actor

Your thoughts

Sort of boring, as I recall from seeing it in theaters during the first release. Fell asleep about 3/4 in and then caught the very end. It was okay, and the big "twist" was surprising:
Spoiler:
The sudden death of the Forrest Whittaker character
but I'm not sure why everybody talks about it all the time. Oh, and the chick was hot.

'The Crying Game' is a good film, I wouldn't call it great.

'The Good Thief' is my favorite Jordan film, followed by 'Mona Lisa'.

It's a good film and I'm still in love with Jaye Davidson. Miranda Richardson was also great in this film.

It's funny now because the movie is old enough that a lot of people who didn't get caught up in the fervor at the time or were too young to remember it can enjoy the "twist".

"Have you ever tried to pick up your teeth with broken fingers?" Still one of my favorite movie threats. The film plays like a pale shadow of Mona Lisa, though. I remember Matt Zoller Seitz at the time busted a caramel-coated nut over the "twist" as though it re-invented cinema, but it was obviously meant to be a surprise to no one but the character of Fergus.

Like some of Jordan's films like The Company Of Wolves, Mona Lisa, The Butcher Boy & Interview With The Vampire but I think that The Crying Game is his best.

It always put me to sleep. And although Groucho was kidding, the
Spoiler:
sudden death of the Forrest Whittaker character
was the only twist that really got to me. By the time the real twist rolledd along, I was too bored to give a crap.

Re: Thoughts on 'The Crying Game' (1992)?

I saw the movie later on, but

Spoiler:
I can't believe that people were supposed to be surprised by Dil's character turning out to be someone else. Maybe it's because I didn't watch it when it first came out. Either way though, I think it was a pretty good movie, even if the surprise is ruined. Dil's lipsyncing performance to the Crying Game was a pretty good scene.

I like the movie. Very good story and acting.

I'm surprised a lot of people thought Dil was a woman from the start of the movie - I knew from the first time I saw him at the beginning that he wasn't.

I really like the film and it holds up for me after repeated viewings...this may be my favorite Neil Jordan film.
