Probably not one of the best ever, but the original score for Searching for Bobby Fischer is quite good, one of Horner's better efforts. They used some of that score to play over the "In Memoriam" segment at the SAG Awards tonight, which made me think of it:

[snark] Are you sure it wasn't just the original piece that Horner nicked? [/snark]

Actually, it's the only good thing about that film. Decent at the time it was released. But man has it aged horribly. I mean, it was always camp. But the special effects are just terrible.

Phh, whatever; first off, it was a joke, and second, I like Horner's work.

Here's another one that popped up in a lot of trailers...

Zimmer's score albums (and those of Remote Control Productions in general) are typically the cues he composed rather than how they were re-edited and re-organized in the film itself.

Most of the missing cues are bits and pieces written by other composers based on Zimmer's main cues. The other composers from Remote COntrol Productions do this as well in a form of mentoring program.

Yeah, that's a great one; I wasn't sure if it was "epic or sweeping" enough but it's glad to see someone else think so. I also love the piece at the end when the 18 wheeler fades into the sunset.

I dunno how sweeping or epic it is, but the Phillip Glass score for Kundun is a masterpiece.

Re: Best "sweeping/epic" score

I'm not a huge fan of the "blockbuster film" music that he tends to write, but Zimmer can do some great layering, like this piece from Public Enemies:

Umm, that's Elliot Goldenthal, not Zimmer. Though, to be fair, it does sound a lot like The Thin Red Line.

Has anyone mentioned Carter Burwell yet? He's done a lot of stuff for the Coen Bros.

Hah, thanks for the correction, I thought I had read Zimmer along time ago as the scorer.

Re: Best "sweeping/epic" score

Everyone remembers the songs by Queen (which were indeed fantastic) but everyone unfairly forgets the truly epic and sweeping score by Michael Kamen.

<iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/tCkV0qSJRkk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Although not an epic film, Back To The Future had a score that, although usually subdued, had a rather epic quality to it.

<iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/hkJUJ7TB_oU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Michael Kamen also composed a fantastic score for Band Of Brothers.

<iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/El63cSa4ag8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

<iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ag8KbhbCKXI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

And now for something truly epic:

Re: Best "sweeping/epic" score

I alway get chilled listening to David Julyan's score on Memento. Just beautiful.
