Pete Postlethwaite dead
Pete Postlethwaite, the Oscar-nominated British actor, has died at the age of 64.
He died in hospital on Sunday after a lengthy battle with cancer. The Warrington-born actor was once described by Steven Spielberg as “the best actor in the world”, and was made an OBE in the 2004 New Year’s Honours List. After beginning his career on the stage, his breakthrough film performance was in 1988’s Distant Voices, Still Lives. He was then nominated for the best supporting actor Academy Award in 1993 for his performance in In the Name of the Father. Postlethwaite went on to star in several of the most popular films of the 1990s, including The Usual Suspects, Brassed Off and Romeo + Juliet. He returned to the theatre to play King Lear when Liverpool became European Capital of Culture in 2008. One of his most recent appearances was in Inception, last year’s hit science-fiction film. He had continued to work until recently despite receiving treatment for cancer. Andrew Richardson, a friend of Postlethwaite, announced on Monday morning that he had passed away peacefully in hospital in Shropshire on Sunday. Postlethwaite is survived by his wife and two children. |
Re: Pete Postlethwaite dead
Yeah, I came here to post that. So long to a great actor.

Re: Pete Postlethwaite dead
Such a great actor. When I was younger I was always fascinated by him mostly because of his unique look and his strange last name. :) In the Name of the Father is one of my all time favorites.

Re: Pete Postlethwaite dead
Oh shit, I didn't think I knew who this was but he was the father in Romeo and Juliet and I recently saw him in The Town. Great actor. He will be missed.

(he really wasn't looking all that well in 'The Town') Nor in Inception. He was such a chameleon, he could play tough or fragile. He'll be missed. |
Re: Pete Postlethwaite dead
Such a sad face. R.I.P.

Re: Pete Postlethwaite dead
It disappointed me that he appeared in the ecopropaganda film The Age of Stupid last year. But I do separate my opinions of actors' political positions from their acting (or I might never see a movie again ;)) and I don't let my thinking they are stupid idiots stop me from seeing their films and admiring their acting abilities.
He was a great actor and I will miss him. |
Re: Pete Postlethwaite dead
Sad news. He never made his cancer known to the public, did he? Such a deadly disease.
|
Re: Pete Postlethwaite dead
He was fucking robbed of an Oscar for his magnificent performance in "In The Name Of The Father" in favor of Tommy Lee Jones's scenery chewing in "The Fugitive". Grr. Such a phenomenal actor in far too many ways to mention here. RIP. :(

Re: Pete Postlethwaite dead
RIP Kobayashi. If that was even your real name.

Re: Pete Postlethwaite dead
I thought he looked bad in 'The Town', guess that explains why.
Guy had a hell of a run though. |
Re: Pete Postlethwaite dead
:( Ugh, just sad. After seeing him in so many great movies, I had always hoped he would act until he was 90 or so. Best to his family.

Re: Pete Postlethwaite dead
After seeing IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, I always smiled when I saw his name in a films credits, because I knew he was going to turn in an excellent performance... and even in lighter fare, he always ended up being a highlight. A great actor who will be missed. RIP.
