I don't know who this guy is, but he's all over the place.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Takers and From Paris with Love? Really? Life During Wartime was pretty bad... and I liked Happiness. The Girl on the Train is a pleasant surprise. One of the better films I've seen in the last year. I'm looking forward to watching Another Year and Inspector Bellamy. |

I disagree
|
Re: Who needs Ebert?? The Best of 2010 according to Armond White!!!
I'd actually put Scott Pilgrim on my list.
I don't know how I should feel about this. |
Re: Who needs Ebert?? The Best of 2010 according to Armond White!!!
Genuinely surprised that #1 isn't Toy Story 3.

Pretentious sissy list.

Re: Who needs Ebert?? The Best of 2010 according to Armond White!!!
Given that Scott Pilgrim is actually generally liked by the internet fanboys, i'm surprised he put it at no. 1

Re: Who needs Ebert?? The Best of 2010 according to Armond White!!!
puzzling. even though i wasn't big on Wild Grass despite its stunning visuals, i thought it was critically acclaimed? which means... why the fuck did it make Armand White's top 10 list?!
|
Re: Who needs Ebert?? The Best of 2010 according to Armond White!!!
1) Scott Pilgrim vs. the World 80%
2) Vincere 92% 3) Wild Grass 66% 4) Mother and Child 79% 5) Life During Wartime 68% 6) Another Year 94% 7) Inspector Bellamy 81% 8) The Girl on the Train 79% 9) Takers 29% 10) From Paris With Love 38% __________________ It's like a pretentious list with a few guilty pleasures thrown in. |
Re: Who needs Ebert?? The Best of 2010 according to Armond White!!!
I saw Scott Pilgrim vs. the World last week and was looking forward to it because of all the great reviews and boy was I disappointed. Scott Pilgrim was just dumb. I know it was going for the cooler trendy type feel but in my opinion failed.

I thought the movie was great myself, but it's definitely not for everybody.
|
Re: Who needs Ebert?? The Best of 2010 according to Armond White!!!
Are we going to have a separate thread for every critic's top ten?
|
Re: Who needs Ebert?? The Best of 2010 according to Armond White!!!
 I posted Eberts in the AFI top 10 thread, I should request that one get renamed the thread of top 10s.

'Mother and Child' was Hallmark Channel fodder - ewwww

Here's hoping he puts out one of his annual "Better Than" lists - those are always a lot of fun.
Anyways, this is actually a pretty good list, and surprisingly uncontroversial (excepting the last two, of course.) "Vincere" really is an incredible film (though its "operatic" nature may make it off-putting for some), and, as a big fan of Mike Leigh, "Another Year" has been one of my most anticipated films for quite a while. |

I don't know much about the guy, but I do have a few old National Society of Film Critics books, in which some reviews of his appear, and he seems like an intelligent reviewer who has a race chip on his shoulder. He works racism into many of his reviews.

Of course, equally annoying are the Rotten Tomatoes hordes who fill the comments section of the NY Press site with idiotic and racist remarks every time he writes a negative review of a well-liked film. |

I don't get this forum's fascination with him.

It would be too easy to outright dismiss the guy. I'm of the mind that being pushed to explore and defend my position is healthy and generally speaking I'm in favor of that kind of intellectual prodding. It's true that White generally rebuffs any disagreement by saying we're unqualified to even question him, and if I were in an actual discussion with the guy I don't know that I'd be able to maintain that academic state of mind. In real life, though, he's just a guy who writes reviews that serve as a springboard for some occasionally interesting reflections. |
Re: Who needs Ebert?? The Best of 2010 according to Armond White!!!
I had a a lot of fun watching From Paris With Love. I haven't watched Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. I've never heard of the rest of the movies on his list.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World was my favorite film of the year (although I would say the best two films of the year are The Social Network and Black Swan), so kudos to Armond White or something.
