Saw this a few days ago and really enjoyed it. Not a movie i will be rushing back to revisit, but altogether well made and performed. Not sure why its getting so much criticism for the film making aspect. I found it quite fine all round. I enjoyed the Damned United more than this, but that was just personal preference and having a personal history with the story. Colin Firth was excellent and comparing it to the real life King videos on Youtube he really nailed the accent and stutter. Best Actor certainly, Best director...that one goes to Fincher. Best Movie....i would give it to the Social Network as well. But the Academy are suckers for this so i will probably be wrong.

Interesting, there sometimes seems to be a movie that gets the "made for TV" impression during Oscar time. Would you say Michael Clayton fit the bill for that in '07? I thought it was good at first, but now it's pretty forgettable, and some people said it was like an extended pilot for a law series.Originally Posted by PopcornTreeCt
I want to make a note of my criticism, had this been a made-for-HBO film (and rightfully where it belongs) I would be happily giving it great praise. However, this is not the case. It does not belong in the same category of films like Black Swan or The Social Network.

Michael Clayton came out around the same time Damages was finishing its first season.
It felt like a condensed version of that. And they built up this central character with plotlines that go nowhere (just day in the life of stuff) with a plot that felt a little "case of the week" and it does wind up feeling a bit like an entire season of a show condensed into a movie. Still a good flick though.

Some of the 'criticism' of film around here.

Funny, but I do remember people saying this during The Walking Dead threads as well.

I'm not saying the rating system is always right or that they don't bend the rules for certain people/films. But I think trying to get a film that says Fuck almost 50 times a PG-13 rating is asking too much. If they wanted a PG-13 rating so bad why didn't they shoot different takes without the word? Or rewrite the scenes all together before shooting? HW has been in the business long enough to know that much of that type of language is going to get an R rating.
I wasn't keeping count, but I don't think it was said that many times.Originally Posted by ScissorPuppy

I haven't seen the movie yet, I plan to this weekend. But some of the articles I read about the situation mention 43 and 47 times that the word Fuck is used.Originally Posted by Dr. DVD

I doubt I'll keep count while watching, but if true it seems excessive if a pg-13 rating is desired.

It is quite excessive and all used in a scene to make senior citizens giggle.Originally Posted by ScissorPuppy

The age-diverse crowd I was in all seemed to find that scene very entertaining.

No way was there that many fucks in it - like 10 tops - in Canada, this movie is rated PG.

But must an American critic be the one to point out that the dude might not have much to say in the first place? A war with “Herr Hitler” brews; here on the sidelines are figures like Winston Churchill (Timothy Spall, almost a caricature), who would actually make the tough calls. Honestly, the thought of George VI flubbing his big moment pales in the larger picture. Via some closing text, we learn that he inspired the nation to strength. But politics is about more than being in fine voice.

Pretty much like if Roosevelt done the same with his "Day of Infamy" speech. I'm sure everyone would just go along with it and not point it out.Originally Posted by Giles

If he doesn't understand the power of words and speeches in such times perhaps he should be a reviewer. What with "words" and such things.

I saw the film eariler today, It wasn't bad, but it wasn't a best picture for sure. It definantly had an HBO movie feel to it. I can see how people feel this is really a PG movie, other than 2 scenes of swearing it doesn't have any other type of things you would expect from an R rated film. I counted 28 uses of the word "Fuck". I still think they could have handled that better if they desired a lower rating. And I really don't see how those words couldn't have been edited out or replaced with something just as comical. Whatever, I still feel like releasing a "Bleeped" version is stupid as "fuck".

Jeez, the film with the most Oscar nominations in the history of the Academy only has a three-page thread? Probably says something about the average user age on the DVD Talk Forum!
I admit, it's not really my kind of movie either - so very British. But Colin Firth seriously acts his ass off in this one. Hope he wins.

No..not so much age, I'd think. More like taste. I saw this film..and I'm 24. Disregarding my education and it's relevance...I'm sure I'd see it as well without my education.Originally Posted by terrible chong

The film was very good but not on the level of Black Swan or True Grit. The use of "fuck" was perfectly fine. Wormtail as Churchill was just bad. Rush was fantastic as was Carter. I liked it.

It was like a Churchill impersonation that a stand-up comic might do. "War with Germany will come, herm herm jowl jowl."
