Flash Gordon will always be the film that introduced me to him. Such a memorable character.

That was a pretty good performance.

Because I saw it so many times as a child, I always associate him with Victory.

Re: Max Von Sydow

just watched Hawaii for the first time today. not one of his strongest works (i imagine because it's one of his earliest American films), but a great film nonetheless.

i vote 'Seventh Seal' or 'Hour of the Wolf'.

Re: Max Von Sydow

Recently re-watched Pelle the Conqueror. Damn he was great.

Footnote: MVS as Lassefar lost out to Dustin Hoffman in fucking Rain Man for the best actor Oscar? As bad a stunt performance as there is.

Not really surprised I guess.

Von Sydow was amazing in this.

For sentimental reasons, I voted other for Until The End of the World: Director's Cut.

I've never heard of this film till now. I like Wenders' films but I don't pursue them. There has to be some level of attraction to the film for me to pursue it. Seeing that this film has MVS and the title is interesting...I wish I could find in on BD. Anchor Bay was to release it here but, from what I can see, the change in ownership didn't leave them w/ interest in Wenders. How sad. I really want to see that film...and especially in it's DC form.

Re: Max Von Sydow

The DC of Until The End of the World has never been released in the States on any format. I was lucky enough to see it in 35mm a few years back, then bought an import copy of it on DVD.

Re: Max Von Sydow

I picked the Seventh Seal. But the Exorcist is a close second, followed by Minority Report.

Three Days of the Condor followed very close by The Exorcist.

Re: Max Von Sydow

Admittedly I haven't even broken the surface on Von Sydow's filmography, but so far my favorite performance from him is as Merrin from The Exorcist followed by Three Days of the Condor.

Do yourself a favor and watch these films by one of the greatest actor/director collaborations ever.

The Seventh Seal
Wild Strawberries
The Virgin Spring
Through A Glass Darkly
Hour of The Wolf
The Passion Of Anna
The Magician
Winter Light
Shame
The Touch
Brink of Life

I will definitely do that. Thanks a lot for the recommendations. I have the first three titles on DVR.

My pick too.

LOVE this movie...I still get chills watching that near-silent sequence near the end when the POW's make their comeback behind some spectacular plays by Pele, Bobby Moore, Sylvester Stallone (), etc.

Granted, Von Sydow doesn't do much but nod and smile knowingly during the final contest, but it's still my fave performance of the Von Sydow films I've seen.

He was really good in that one. Aside from Rob Schneider that was a good movie - and Von Sydow & Armand Assante were both excellent.

I loved his cameo in Conan The Barbarian (1982) as the king.

I was really big on the soundtrack for this back in the day. When the film came out on VHS I couldn't wait to see it but if I remember correctly I couldn't even get through it. Then it dissapeared and I never thought about it again. I think Paris Texas is a masterpiece but hated Wings of Desire...I probably need to give Until The End Of The World another shot.

Re: Max Von Sydow

Don't watch the US cut, though. It's not worth watching it's not the director's cut. You'll know the difference because the director's cut is in three parts and runs almost six hours.

Bumping this because, well... Max Von Sydow.

Plus I just re-watched The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries and Hour of the Wolf. Bergman's work is truly breathtaking.

I actually got kinda nervous thinking he had died with this bump.

He's totally awesome anyway!

Add me to the scared crowd. I was worried Von Sydow had passed away.
