This, by far.

The original Alex Kintner death scene was even more horrifying....

Too bad Spielberg was such a pussy. I think he said that scene would have been too gruesome. Still, if he was actually able to pull that original Alex Kintner scene off, that would have been something else. Of course the shark never frickin worked so it probably never would have happened even if Spielberg really wanted to film it that way.

The original version of the dude in the pond's death was a lot more graphic too.

I didn't see it mentioned yet, but Trick 'R Treat has some pretty nasty stuff done to kids.

Actually, I just remembered that this movie had two kid killings. The last one to occur was the most shocking though.

Ironically, the first killing which opens the movie involved kid rapper, Chi Ali, who was later convicted of murder.

Sometimes it's even worse when it's left to the imagination after the fact as in that scene.

Remember The X-Files, where all you see are the kid's eyes filling up with black oil?

I thought about watching it when I saw City of Life and Death, but I have no desire to see it anymore because i'm sure it's probably just another fair, forgettable war movie. I just can't take another non-gripping war film - they are just a dime a dozen.

I don't think this one was a child death, but in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, I was always disturbed by the Indian kid that escapes the mines and comes back to the village in the middle of the night (the scene where Indiana Jones is just leaning up against some village hut). I wasn't sure if he died in his mother's hands or not - his eyes rolled back, but I think he kept on moaning. But that kid creeped me out.

not really shocking or terribly disturbing... but artistically well-done:

What movie is that? I looked for it in the IMDB and found several matches. Is it a good one to see?

Bridge to Terabithia - not shocking as in gruesome, but completely unexpected and suddenly took the movie in a whole new direction.

Lady Vengeance

Spoiler:
Even though there's only one on-screen death of a child, the montage of videos of the crying children begging to be returned to their families was realistic and disturbing.

Here's the imdb link: Baby Blues

I can recommend it, though it may not be for everyone because of the aforementioned violence/subject matter. Last year, I picked it up at Wal-mart as part of a triple feature horror DVD for $5.

He dies and snakes and bugs come out of his head, but because he's wearing the mask, the impact is somewhat muted. I wouldn't rate this one as especially shocking, myself.

Re: Most Shocking Child Deaths in Films?

Not necessarily gruesome, but one that always stuck out with me was in The World According To Garp...

Spoiler:
where Robin William's younger son dies in the car accident. Everything about it is just nightmarish. Williams has his two sons in the car and he's racing around at top speed looking for his cheating wife, who is blowing her lover in his car in the family driveway. Williams is still speeding and pulls into the driveway, ACCIDENTALLY SMASHING into the car with his wife and the lover, while she's blowing him. The younger son dies in the accident, impaled on the gear shift (This detail is from the book, but in the movie it is handled differently by not showing the car crash, but going freeze frame on the interior of the car with Williams and the boys, with the sound of the accident in the background and a slow pan over onto the younger son's face).

What's even MORE gruesome about this scene is that
Spoiler:
the wife ends up accidentally biting the guy's cock off!!

And also, it's pretty disgusting what happens to Robin Williams:
Spoiler:
He bites his tongue pretty badly that he needs stitches

And his older son
Spoiler:
loses an eye cuz I think he impales it on the gear shift
