William Sadler is set to reprise his role as Death in the upcoming sequel Bill & Ted Face the Music, the film's official Twitter account revealed on Monday. "For those who have been asking, @Wm_Sadler will totally be reprising his role!" read the post .
Sadler played the Grim Reaper in 1991's Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, in which the character challenges Bill and Ted in a number of games for their souls. The pair ultimately win.
Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter return as the time-traveling rockers Ted "Theodore" Logan and Bill S. Preston Esq. in the film set for an Aug. 21, 2020 release.
"We want to say thank you to you the fans," Reeves said in a recent message to fans from the Hollywood Bowl, with Winters adding, "We owe you a huge debt of gratitude."
Reeves' and Winter's careers broke out thanks to 1989's Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, which was directed by Stephen Herek.
Original creators Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon penned the script for Face the Music, with Galaxy Quest's Dean Parisot directing.
Scott Kroopf will produce with Alex Lebovici and Steve Ponce of Hammerstone Studios, with Steven Soderbergh serving as an executive producer alongside R. Scott Reid, John Ryan Jr., Scott Fischer and John Santilli.
Orion Pictures will release Bill & Ted Face the Music through United Artists Releasing.
<script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>He's so deeply missed by all who worked with him on the previous two films. His character will not be recast, but his absence will be a part of the whole third movie - including what is possibly the most emotional scene of the film.

Keanu Reeves (‘John Wick’) and Alex Winter (‘The Lost Boys’) will be reprising their roles as the titular characters. Also, William Sadler (‘The Shawshank Redemption’) is returning to play the Grim Reaper. The late George Carlin will also appear as Rufus in the form of archival footage.
The synopsis of the time-travel comedy is as follows:
“When we last picked up with the most audacious dudes they were time-traveling teenagers trying to pass history class and win the battle of the bands. Once prophesied to save the universe with their rock ‘n’ roll, according to the production the new movie will see the two best friends as middle-aged men with family responsibilities who have yet to fulfill their destiny. They’ve written thousands of tunes, but they have yet to write a good one, much less the greatest song ever.
With the fabric of time and space tearing around them, a visitor from the future warns the duo that only their music can save life as we know it. Out of luck and inspiration, Bill and Ted set out on another time-travel adventure — with the help of their daughters, a new crop of historical figures and some sympathetic music legends — to seek the song that will set their world right and bring harmony in the universe as we know it.”
Meanwhile, more casting announcements should be coming soon. The two daughters in particular should be cast very soon.
Moreover, director Dean Parisot (‘Galaxy Quest, RED 2’) is onboard. The screenplay is from returning scribes Chris Matheson (‘A Goofy Movie’) and Ed Solomon (‘Men in Black’). The veteran writing duo are responsible for ‘Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure’ and ‘Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey.’
‘Bill & Ted Face the Music’ will release August 21, 2020.
I'd guess Keanu is probably the only American actor to star as the lead in three successful trilogies based on original IP.
If only we can get a Ride Along 3, you can add Ice Cube to your stats!

'Bill & Ted 3' Finds Daughters for 'Face the Music'
Samara Weaving and Brigette Lundy-Paine will play the onscreen children of Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, respectively.
The Wyld Stallyns are grown up, and they now have children of their own.
Bill & Ted Face the Music has cast Brigette Lundy-Paine and Samara Weaving as the daughters to the film series' time traveling protagonists Bill and Ted.
Lundy-Paine, whose credits include Atypical and The Glass Castle, will play Thea Preston, daughter of Bill S. Preston Esq (Alex Winter). Weaving, who is known for Netflix's The Babysitter and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, joins the sequel as Billie Logan, the daughter of Ted "Theodore" Logan (Keanu Reeves).
“When we saw Samara and Brigette together, it was like deja vu," producer Scott Kroopf said in a statement. "It was exactly the way we felt when we first saw Keanu and Alex. We are so thrilled to have this funny and unique pair join the Bill and Ted team!”
Reeves previously told The Hollywood Reporter the film would introduce Bill and Ted's children, explaining: “I'm sure they can't help but have a bit of their mothers and fathers in them. So we'll see how that expresses itself.”
Reeves and Winter broke out thanks to 1989's Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, which was directed by Stephen Herek and centered on two lovable slacker teens who travel through time with the help of a phone both. It became a surprise hit and a cultural touchstone and was followed by 1991's Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey as well as an animated series.
Original creators Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon penned the script for Face the Music, with Galaxy Quest's Dean Parisot directing. Kroopf will produce with Alex Lebovici and Steve Ponce of Hammerstone Studios, with Steven Soderbergh serving as an executive producer alongside R. Scott Reid, John Ryan Jr., Scott Fischer and John Santilli.
Coming up, Lundy-Pain has the Roger Ailes project Fair and Balanced. Weaving has Fox Searchlight’s Ready or Not out in August.
Lundy-Paine is represented by Gersh. Weaving is represented by WME and Untitled Entertainment.
Orion Pictures opens Bill & Ted Face the Music on Aug. 21, 2020.
