Currently in preproduction, Bill & Ted Face the Music will see the duo long past their days as time-traveling teenagers and now weighed down by middle age and the responsibilities of family. They’ve written thousands of tunes, but they have yet to write a good one, much less the greatest song ever written. With the fabric of time and space tearing around them, a visitor from the future warns our heroes that only their song can save life as we know it. Out of luck and fresh out of inspiration, Bill and Ted set out on a time travel adventure to seek the song that will set their world right and bring harmony in the universe. Together with the aid of their daughters, a new crop of historical figures and some sympathetic music legends, they find much, much more than just a song.

The royal babes became their girlfriends at the end of the first one. I don’t remember them having kids. But you may be right.

Now that the third film is finally coming to fruition I should finally get caught up and watch the second film. I had a blast seeing the first in theaters but for one reason or another I never saw the 2nd in theaters or on home video/cable.
This happened to me on the Back To The Future series where I saw the first in theaters and of course it was a blast but I never bothered with the 2nd or 3rd film. I even bought the trilogy on sale years back on blu but ended up flipping it for a bit more than paid when I realized that I just had no interest in seeing the 2nd and 3rd film...this is why I tend to be on the outside looking in when folks on-line start up a conversation about the beloved BTTF trilogy.
To this day I still have no desire to catch up on the BTTF films but I am down for actually watching the 2nd Bill & Ted film.
I have a surprising amount of pop culture blind spots given how much of a pop culture fan I claim to be but part of the reason why I have these blind spots is that if I did not see it in theaters I had to rely on catching up on VHS.
Of course, some films would make their way to network tv (cut with commercials of course, but hey if I missed it in theaters it showing up on TV was wonderful for me to still get to see a close to complete version of the film when I was growing up), but I did not grow up with cable in my household (basic or otherwise) so I missed the whole rite of passage thing lots of teens went through watching all of those infamous "skinemax" films that were produced in the 80s/90s.
Sorry for the tangent, but yeah...this film sounds like it could be a fun way to kill a couple of hours.

What is your problem? Just watch BTTF 2 and 3 already.

Of course Bogus Journey was aimed at a younger audience and spent half the movie spoofing The Seventh Seal. I don’t think many of us knew what they were referencing when we saw it as kids, so who knows.

Yeah, not sure why they have to sell to millennials. I'm sure the movie would be made on a pretty low budget and rely on a decent enough opening week nostalgia to make money as a fun passion project for the guys involved.

I never knew why but the way Sadler said "you sunk my Battleship" in the sequel always made me laugh my ass off.

You laughed because it's funny! Sadler is great in the role.
He also makes a cameo as Death in one of the bumper scenes for Tales from the Crypt (Orion Pictures gave permission for them to use the character).

Used to be a lot of Circle K's in Canada. Not sure if they're still around.

I see Circle K's around here in Southern California. There's one about a mile from my office actually, and I always think about Bill and Ted when I get gas over there.

I can’t not ask about Bill & Ted. Is Face the Music actually, definitely happening?
Well, we’re in pre-prep and are set to shoot in early 2019. So right now, all systems are go. My old line when Blockbuster was in business was that I’d never believe a film was a go until the video was at Blockbuster. But I don’t know what to say anymore ... Netflix?
Given how long it’s been talked about, did you think the film would ever happen?
The idea was hatched by the four of us about 10 years ago – Keanu and myself and Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon. It didn’t happen without a lot of work. Most films aren’t easy, but a comedy sequel 25 years later wasn’t a slam dunk for most studios. While they loved the script it took us time to convince the financiers. And when they came on board they really came on board. And you know, they’ve had plenty of time to make the script great. The upside of it taking so long is the script is really good!
Does it feel strange to be skipping from the world of The Panama Papers and serious documentary making, to Bill S. Preston Esq?
The funny thing is, I was a very serious film student at NYU before I’d acted. I’d always wanted to write and direct so I went away and studied and then came out to LA and acting was my day job. I was just very lucky to land some really big projects. I don’t have any trouble turning off that side of my brain when I go to act. And there’s something about playing Bill that is so playful, it’s almost kind of a balm to all of the seriousness of the work that I’ve been doing, and also the world we’re living in. The characters are like nine years old, mentally. So there’s an innocence to them that’s very genuine and I’m really looking to hiding form the world in that character for a few months.
What was the reaction when Face the Music was formally announced?
It was an interesting litmus test. But the fan response has been enormous. It helped us get the financing because there was an overwhelmingly positive response to the idea of us doing this. Even in the age of internet comment trolling, we haven’t really encountered any pervasive negativity. The concerns that I’ve encountered are totally valid – don’t screw up the tone of the first two, make it a real Bill & Ted movie. And the question of how you revisit these characters so much later, that I’m not concerned about, because we think the comedy works great. Not that I want the film to stall any longer, but in a way, given the plotline, the older we get the funnier it gets.
