Alternately known as "Wild Horses of Fire", directed by one of Russia's greats, Sergei Parajanov. The actor referenced is Nikolai Grinko, who was in most of Tarkovsky's films.

Is this an English-language movie?

Winner of a "Best Debut" prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
The Oscar® winner mentioned earlier has won a total of three; the other one was in the 1980s.
Associates of the author of the source novel [Joseph Campbell and Henry Morton Robinson] wrote articles suggesting that a prominent playwright [Thornton Wilder] appropriated many of the novel's ideas and themes, incorporating them into a Pulitzer Prize-winning play [The Skin of Our Teeth].

Finnegan's Wake (1965), which I have on "DVD"
but haven't watched yet.
I'm sorry, but we're low on monthly usage over here, so I'll have to hand out the wildcard hoping the thread doesn't go dormant for weeks again.

First time I've ever read one of these threads though I see them all the time. Don't think I could ever compete here because I haven't seen most of the ones listed. Even though I've seen The Coca-Cola Kid, I wouldn't have gotten it till I saw the old guy with the beard and hat. I guess a shot of Greta Scacchi would have been too easy...

I've been thinking of coming up with some sort of handicapping system that could be used as an option to try to level the playing field a bit. The game as played now is essentially an unlimited competion, so that there's little chance for a more casual player to compete with someone who's seen gazillions of movies or remembers (or researches) all of the trivia in the clues. What I've thought of is this: a player can designate their new movie as handicapped. The handicap is the number of correct guesses each guesser had in the previous round. If someone had 10 correct guesses in the previous round, then they would have to wait until the 10th picture is posted before guessing. If someone had one or no correct guesses, they can start guessing immediately. This gives the lesser players a head start on the stronger players for that movie.
No more than every other new movie posted could be handicapped -- I think that would be too restrictive on the stronger players.
I think this might possibly be a way to get some easier movies (or easier shots) into play for some new players.
Any feedback? Is this too complicated?

My question is, who the hell is even playing anymore? It seems like you can count us on one hand. Hardly anyone makes use of the two guesses, nobody (aside from me) uses that one available question to narrow the options.
I'm all for getting more people involved. The more the merrier. But excluding the regular players doesn't sound like a great plan to me.

I regularly check this thread but don't participate because, as of late, haven't seen most of the movies listed. Nice ideas for what to watch in the future, though

You're one of the regulars to whom I was referring. I often (i.e. usually) haven't seen the movies either, but the way I look at it is, it can't hurt to use one of the allocated guesses or the question. If it transpires that someone else ultimately gets the right answer, who cares?Originally Posted by Mondo Kane

The last movie I posted, I put up 25 pictures before the first guess was made (I have to admit, though, that I'm guilty of posting a lot of indistinct, unhelpful shots just because I like them from an artistic standpoint
). After the first dozen or so shots without a peep from anyone, one feels ridiculous putting up more. If a few people had taken guesses in between, it might have been narrowed down much faster.I don't think it's a good idea to put shackles on the regular players/contributors, but if that's what the majority wants... I do think it's a good idea if perhaps a few more commonly known movies were posted. That would put fans of esoterica - like me - at a disadvantage, but that's fine if it gets more folks involved. I imagine few people here have heard of the last two movies, let alone seen them.

I've gotten so used to this thread dropping off the first page that I sometimes don't notice when it's active again for a day or two. But I do keep checking it when I know someone is posting shots.Originally Posted by Norm de Plume

Yeah, it can get lonely if no one is guessing. I haven't been guessing recently because I know I don't know the films. Originally Posted by Norm de Plume

I tried to mix it up some with the films I've posted. If I think my last film was something only a few folks here have probably seen, I'll try to post pics from a better-known film the next time.Originally Posted by Norm de Plume

That's probably a tack I will adopt from now on, too. Alternate between an obscure film and a better-known one. I own hardly any mainstream Hollywood flicks at all, but I can choose between low, low profile films and medium profile ones.Originally Posted by Dimension X

I used to play a lot back when Kudama was around and it was mostly 80's movies but now whenever I come her it is almost always some weird b/w movie. How about a decade version next round. Guess That Movie By Screenshot (90's version) or something like that?

I'll probably visit the thread again now that I know what it's about, but while I like classics, I'm really not good in foreign language so I don't know if I'll actually compete.
Have to say that the opening recap post was awesome, though, obscurelabel.
