Exactly. Slackers create bands for no reason other than to have something to do. Hipsters sport ironic beards and wear sweaters in 100 degree weather.

Re: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (Wright, 2010) — The Reviews Thread
I thought Scott was very anti-hipster. He liked goofy, geeky stuff not in an ironic way but because he WAS a geek and a slacker. I would maybe say Ramona is a bit hipster, but only because she's looking for an identity and Scott was different from all that.
Now, as for the marketing, yeah, it was aiming for the cool or "too cool for the other people" crowd, which is not quite the audience for it. I mean, Scott is even scared of his hair being too silly-looking around people. Hipsters would just be "you just don't get it". The only way Scott wanted to stand out was in his band, by whatever talent he had. It's not "look at me, I'm cool", but more "we're in a band. Does that mean we can be cool now?"
BTW-thanks for the folks who pointed out Hot Fuzz actually did well at the box office. I was always under the impression it underperformed and I'm glad I was incorrect.

Re: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (Wright, 2010) — The Reviews Thread
I felt the same way after watching this that I did after finishing Sin City and Speed Racer. It is a special feeling. The feeling that I've just seen something new. Someone has created a new way to tell a story. The story itself may not be completely original, that is nearly impossible, but the vehicle felt completely new. I smiled as the credits rolled and I'll have to find the time to watch it again before it leaves the theater.

I just finished writing a review for the film for my new blog, Cinema Dailies, here: http://cinemadailies.com/
I hope I did the film some justice. This was, hands down, the best movie this year so far. The more I think about it the more I love it.
I'm pretty exhausted right now, and have to go to bed and get up for work in just a few hours, but this movie demanded that I write about my love for it immediately. I could continue to shout my love for it for hours, and hours...

One more thing on the "hipster" talk: a hilarious post by user Patrick Ripoll over at the CHUD forums in their Scott Pilgrim thread:

I guess Scott and his friends are struggling installation artists that live in Brooklyn and are in a glo-fi band, and Scott meets Ramona because while he's interning for Matthew Barney, she's John Cage's secretary and before they can date, he has to fight all of her artistic influences in the comments of the art forum website!'
And then you go see it and Scott is in a rock band, and it has video game references and music by Beck. Your dad listens to Beck."

This is above all an Edgar Wright comedy (with terrific action sequences and realistic romantic elements). Fans of SPACED will love it. Get out there and see it.

Loved this film and I have never read the comics.
First just a quick note about how I saw it. I went to the Empire Movie-Con weekend here in London. We had this film as a "surprise screening" (which we all knew about a few weeks ago) as this film is not out for another 2 weeks.
Just before the film started Edgar came out to present it and said that him and the creator will be out afterwards for a Q&A. They both landed about 2 hours before and were really hungover.
Also just before the screening started John Landis popped into the screening and took a seat. He mentioned in the Q&A that he seen 40 minutes a few months ago and this one of the only ways to see the completed films.
Anyways, I loved it. I had no expectations for this film whatsoever. The action was great, Cera handled himself very well in the action. I loved the vegan academy/police and Chris Evans entrance was superb.
I may buy this on BD.
Edgar said they had recorded the commentary on Saturday.

Hopefully multiple commentaries. Really, aside from wishing people would see it, my only fear with low box office was that we wouldn't get as full a bonus package when the film hits DVD & Blu, and Wright's multiple cast and crew tracks are always good, so hopefully we get at least two (Edgar, Bryan, and Michael Bacall, and Edgar with cast members).

Again, using Serenity as an example: horrible box office, great DVD sales. They did two versions of it and added even more for the Blu Ray release. Then again, this was made with the other fella in charge, so whoever is running Universal now may not be as generous.

Re: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (Wright, 2010) — The Reviews Thread
finally saw this tonight and loved every second of it. i'm a fan of the books and wright really knocked this out of the park. such a travesty this movie isn't doing well at the box office. wright is 3 for 3 (plus an amazing tv series and a hilarious fake trailer) and i'm fairly sure he can do no wrong. excellent casting and the comedic beats were perfect. can't wait to check this out again later this week and for the eventual blu-ray release!

If I was really wishing:
- Edgar Wright, Michael Bacall, and Nira Park
- Edgar Wright and Bryan Lee O'Malley
- Edgar Wright, Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Mark Webber, Alison Pill, Johnny Simmons and Ellen Wong
- Edgar Wright, Satya Bhaba, Chris Evans, Brandon Routh, Brie Larson, Mae Whitman and Jason Schwartzman (and the guys who played the Katayanagi Twins, if they speak any English)
- Edgar Wright and Nigel Godrich
Plus your suggestion. SIX COMMENTARIES FTW

So did anyone of you who love the movie, hate the trailer?
I'm intrigued by all the positive reviews but I really thought the trailer made it look godawful.

The movie itself was 100x better, but the trailer is what made me want to see it in the first place.
