That tag team review on Chud.com was interesting. Both said they found the movie entertaining, but that it somehow seemed lacking. The guy who gave it the more lackluster review said that if it were made in the time period that inspired it, it would not be a well remembered action movie. Well, FWIW, MOST of the movies that came out during that time period were forgettable, and even those that were good, weren't great by any means. Rambo (1985) is good action, but it is cheesy to the max. Same can be said for Commando or Running Man. Die Hard was exceptional, I'll give that one a pass.

All I'm looking for in The Expendables is a movie decent enough to buy on Blu-Ray and pop into the player whenever I want to drink a few beers and not do much thinking. Kind of like Scarface and Gladiator (I realize the latter won Best Picture, probably the most undeserving win I've ever seen, but I still like it).

I totally disagree regarding the original Rambo film. As I say in my review, I think First Blood is a true classic that deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Predator and Die Hard. In fact, I'd probably put it above Predator.

I did soften a tad though. While I came in the thread saying my one-star grade was too low, I ended up giving it a 1.5.

First Blood is a true classic -- it absolutely belongs on the same list as Predator and Die Hard. It's for this very reason that I cannot even fathom the idea of watching the sequels which I have no doubt will only seek to try and destroy my good feelings towards First Blood.

I'm pretty sure he's referring to First Blood II: Rambo, as First Blood came out in 1982 and he specifically said Rambo (1985).

The Rambo sequels completely ruined the original character. He went from an emotionally and psychologically troubled war vet too a thoughtless, emotionless killing machine. It's sad, because when you say "Rambo" all most people think about is a ripped killer, when the character was much more then that.

I think Rambo is a reasonably good sequel to First Blood. The other two are pretty bad, though, especially the second, which has that Asian woman who rivals Short Round in stupid stereotypes without an iota of Short Round's charisma.

I love III the most cuz that's the one I grew up w/ but yes..it's the worst one. I still love the action though.

No way. III was much better then II.

In what world? III is absurd. II is silly, but compared to III it looks like a documentary.

I hate both First Blood - Part II: Rambo and Rambo III but do get a kick out of the building exploding arrows in the former. It's so beyond over-the-top that it's just silly fun to watch. Almost Commando fun. Sadly, the rest of the movie is pure crap. Rambo III doesn't even have that going for it. I really liked Rambo but love the director's cut, John Rambo. That one really got back to the heart of the character.

That's why I only have First Blood and Rambo/John Rambo on BD. The other two don't exist to me.

The Rambo sequence in UHF is better than both Rambo II and III.

This poster tells me which we're really getting. :(

And the following really bugs me as it was the fight to which I was most looking forward:

Now, you’d think a fight between Jet Li and Dolph Lundgren would be a highlight – no dice. It was a truly terrible example of ADD editing and shaky-cam disorientation that allowed neither actor to showcase any semblance of physical skill – it really could have been anyone in this fight scene such was the lack of any coherent martial arts. They even got Corey Yuen to choreograph it – that’s like hiring Hans Zimmer to provide a fantastic score for your movie, then sneaking into the studio and recording yourself screaming over the whole thing.

Hell, I only have the first one on BD. The CG blood in the 4th one really turned me off to it for some reason.

Does The Expendables feature pretty women to go along with the senseless action?

Man, if you didn't like the CG blood in Rambo -- the only movie I ever thought had passable (not completely convincing, but relatively undistracting) CG violence -- this is just gonna depress you.
