Re: Michael Mann

Heat by a landslide. It's too bad Miami Vice didn't turn out better. It was my favorite 80s show.

The Last of the Mohicans. The theatrical release not the directors cut.

See signature.

BTW, the previous post is my favorite Al Pacino over-the-top moment. "Because she's got a great ASS! And you got your head all the way up it!"

Re: Michael Mann

This is the exact opposite of the Cronenberg poll. Rarely has a multiple choice question been easier to answer. Heat.

Re: Michael Mann

Yeah, Heat with The Last of the Mohicans in a close second. I'm not really too crazy about anything else.

I can understand his idea to make it modern and shot with "shaky-cam" style but I don't agree with it. If he had made a period piece based on a real-life story with the fictional characters, I would have enjoyed that much more.

This is a tough one as it's between the more minimal Thief, the stylized Manhunter, the Insider; I guess the fact that I have the Thief soundtrack will point me in that direction.

Re: Michael Mann

Sort of a dead heat between Collateral and The Insider (with Thief coming in third), but I chose the former, not only because it is probably Mann's most purely entertaining work, but also because there's little to no fat--its focus is squarely on the cat-and-mouse game between Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx, with no other distractions (not to mention Cruise and Foxx are both outstanding).

Shame that Heat is the complete opposite of what I just said: two awful performances from Pacino and De Niro (one is comically over the top, the other is practically comatose), some painfully bad dialogue, lots of characters and subplots that add nothing to the movie except make the film feel overstuffed. Great soundtrack, great shootout in the middle of the movie, but 10 minutes of great footage in a film just shy of 3 hours is a pretty bad ratio.

But overall, Mann has a pretty impressive track record: the only movies that could be considered disappointments would be the aforementioned Heat, Ali (fell into the "greatest hits" trap that many generic biopics do) and Public Enemies (I think a lot of my negativity towards this film has do with the awful decision to shoot on digital, making it look quite cheap and ugly in several scenes, which is a bit of a shock coming from Mann). Everything else is aces.

Re: Michael Mann

This is so easy it's not even funny. Heat. Interestingly, Miami Vice is my second favorite, then Collateral. The Insider and Public Enemies are probably his worst, but I don't think he's terribly great to begin with.

Re: Michael Mann

Heat is such a great movie, one of favs. The movie has a cool story, indepth characters and their inner struggles, and a great shootout action packed scene. How can you not have a great movie where the bad guys are Deniro, Kilmer and Sizemore!

Re: Michael Mann

Miami Vice with Collateral and Heat snapping at its heels. I don't have Heat on high-def, so I've only seen it once.

Re: Michael Mann

I love Heat and Manhunter, but voted The Keep for nostalgic and longing-for-a-release reasons.

Re: Michael Mann

I so love THIEF, it hurts. LAST OFTHE MOHICANS took a POS book and turned it into one of my favorite action/adventure movies of all time. But I gotta go with HEAT.

Tough one here. I voted for the Insider, since I knew Heat would win by a mile. They are even for me.

Had to go with Heat; Collateral and thief are very close though.

Re: Michael Mann

'Public Enemies' easily. Mann shed many of the common flaws in his films for this one, what a movie.

But I really like 'Thief', 'The Insider', and in spite of the lousy Al Pacino performance I really like 'Heat' too. What an epic. Best foley/sound work on a gunfight to date.

In a way though, Pacino toning it down in that final scene in the airport lights helped make up for some of the crap he pulled during the film.

EDIT: some NSFW language in the video.
