I disagree.

Would you like to see remakes of "Gone with the Wind", "The Maltese Falcon", "Casablanca", "Psycho", "Stagecoach", "Duck Soup", "Star Wars" (Lucas meddling not included), "Dr. Strangelove", "2001: A Space Oddysey", "Alien", or other "classics"?

Didn't think so...

I wouldn't care one bit.

1. Remakes DO NOT take anything from the original. You will always have the original.

2. In some cases, admittedly not all, the remake is just as good, if not better than the original. And if it isn't, (See #1)

But then... a remake, good *or* bad, can bring out a new audience for the original who may have never seen or heard of the original.
3. I've always maintained that Film fans should use remakes to point people to the original films. So we agree on this one point.

The main thing I like about remakes is usually a good/better DVD/Blu Ray release of the original happens as a result.

Re: An American Werewolf In London is Getting A Remake. Hooray?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I don't see the point of remaking a film that worked perfectly well the first time. Most of the general audience will have no idea that they are even watching a remake anyway. I bet the large majority of people who saw Death at a Funeral have no idea that a superior film even exists. And sadly it never even gave as us a domestic Blu-ray of the original, so I have to stick with my import copy.

Also, it sucks that the Studios are willing to dump money on remakes at the drop of that hat, but are really tentative about new ideas. I understand why they do it, but it doesn't mean I have to like it. When film historians look back on this decade in film it will be rather embarrassing. The Studios are so desperate for pre-existing properties, that they greenlight films based on toys and board games. Right now we are all style over substance and this remake craze isn't helping to reverse that.

Now, I'm not completely against remakes altogether. If the original film had a lot of problems, then I don't mind a remake. In fact, I would love to see Children of the Corn done well. The first film had some potential, but it fell apart in the end and the special effects are so bad that it's hard to take seriously. Also, the more recent made for TV version was painfully bad.

I'm also okay with remakes if they really change it up and make it their own. I love The Thing, The Fly and to a lesser degree, Dawn of the Dead. Sadly, most remakes don't go this route and instead we get a pastiche of the original with only a few new elements of their own mixed in. I'm looking at you, A Nightmare on Elm Street.

He's out too, unless they decide to renegotiate a new deal with him after they scrapped the last one. They don't currently have any plans for it other than intent to make it.

They could keep the "American Werewolf in ...." in the title just have a different city. They already had American Werewolf in Paris. So why not: American Werewolf in Berlin,
American Werewolf in Amsterdam,
American Werewolf in Madrid,
American Werewolf in Athens,
American Werewolf in Rome, etc..

THIS. as much as I hate saying it If it's a genre film and it gets a remake...we get a good edition of the classic one...usually. A remaster w/ features and whatnot comes soon too. That's the only good thing I see about a remake of an older and still good film. Most remakes suck major ass though.

Dear God Man! You can't use that movie. The original was a piece of crap...no pun intended. They remade a shitty foreign film. And yes, shitty foreign films do in fact exist. By remaking a shitty film they actually gave remakes a bad name.

Maybe, but not nearly as many as you think.

Dude..you know you can multiquote...lol

Anyway...most remakes off of good films..suck. Now remaking a mediocre or bad film and making it a good film? I see that working out more so.

I rather enjoyed the original. Maybe you just have terrible taste in movies?

Go rent Gus Van Zan't '98 remake of Psycho. And exact shot for shot, word for word replica of the original. Yet somehow it still managed to suck.

You can kiss mah ass. My tastes apparently notch a bit higher than yours if you're saying you liked the original Death at a Funeral because that movie was shitty and childish.

Whatever. I'm just saying all the crying over remakes is silly. You still have the original and there's no way it can change the "goodness" of the original.

It is clear that you are just being antagonistic and trying to stir things up by trolling this thread. I gave you a civil response to your immature tirade against people who are against remakes and all you could muster up was an obnoxious attack on a film you could see I enjoyed. But go ahead, keep posting rude comments since it's all you seem to be capable of doing. I'm done taking the bait.

Also, you have terrible taste in film.

It works on TV. CSI, Law & Order, Real Housewives... just slap a new city on the end of it.

American Werewolf: Vatican City
American Werewolf: Stockholm
Or, switch it around ... Czechoslovakian Werewolf in Chattanooga

Really? Dude.... I was having some fun with my belief that remakes are no big deal.

That's why I MADE SURE I used Smileys even in my response to you on page 1 where I thought, apparently I was wrong, that we were cool and just having some fun. Hell, even my post, #36, was meant in a fun way. Mind you, I -never- said anything personal about you or your tastes. Saying a movie is crap isn't an attack on you personally. YOU started making this personal with post #39 when you started with the bad taste in films comment about me. Who got personal first?

Again, I never personally called you or your tastes in film anything until I read #39 in response to you and even then I thought we were just having some fun ribbing each other.

Apparently YOU are the one getting Mad Dude.

But hey, I'll be the bigger Man and apologize for pissing you off just to keep things civil. I honestly didn't mean to get you pissed. I'll even let your parting shot about my film tastes go....

Speaking of which, the original Death at a Funeral was one of the best comedies of the decade.

Good idea. I'd go see Cage and Herzog reteam for American Werewolf: Port of Call New Orleans.

Ah, the smiley defense. I used one as well in my post that got you all riled up, but I guess only yours count, right? Anyway, I'm not mad at all and only took issue with you when you called something I liked shit over and over again in a very crass manor. Your choice of words was clearly meant to illicit a response and I'm sorry the one I gave you got you so upset.

Also, as Dog Soldiers proved, the only way to make a good werewolf movie is to use 100% practical effects. I'll go a step farther and say that CGI in horror is almost always lame.

I completely agree with you when it comes to creature effects. Hopefully, the lame CGI in The Wolfman will serve as a cautionary tale.
