Quentin Tarantino to Direct THE SHADOW?
Quentin Tarantino to Direct THE SHADOW?
Like all things Tarantino, I'll believe it when I see it.
That said, I'd be all for it if it does happen.
“Quentin Tarantino’s The Shadow.” I like the sound of that. Pajiba reports that Tarantino is currently in discussions to direct an adaptation of the pulp superhero The Shadow if he’s not attached already. Pajiba also reports that Tarantino is also attached to co-write, which wouldn’t be a surprise since Tarantino has yet to direct a movie where he wasn’t responsible for the script. Pajiba’s source on this one is the highly-trustworthy “Hollywood Cog” and a movie based on a pulp magazine hero who “knows what evil lies in the hearts of men,” sounds like something Tarantino could work wonders with.
Of course, there are many contradicting factors to consider. In January, we reported that Sam Raimi was producing and might direct an re-adaptation of The Shadow. The character no longer had the stink of the 1994 Alec Baldwin flick upon him and was ready to return to the big screen. This new version would reportedly be a hard-R flick with scenes like “A man thrown into meat grinder and coming out as ground beef on the other side.” In March, there was word that The Twilight Saga: Eclipse director David Slade may take the helm, but Slade told Steve in June that he wasn’t doing the movie and that it was just a rumor. It’s possible, despite the Cog’s impressive track record, that this is just a rumor as well or wishful-studio-thinking at best.
As for Tarantino, he’s also reportedly considering:
* A medieval movie starring Helen Mirren
* An Inglourious Basterds prequel
* Kill Bill 3
And perhaps various other projects that haven’t are still under wraps. But what he chooses to do next, it will obviously be worth our full-attention.

Isn't this something Sam Raimi has always wanted to do? I believe he made Darkman because he wasn't able to get the rights to The Shadow. I also figured that at some point he would give it another shot.
Edit: Ah, I see Raimi was mentioned in the press release. That's what I get for skimming it.

Yeah, F that, it was a good film and I loved Goldsmith's theme.
I can see Tarantino being faithful to the noir aspect but I'm worried of it being "too cool for school."

This is not going to happen. At least with Tarantino behind the camera.
He'll end up being an executive/associate producer on this at most.

Glad to see others that loved Russel Mulcahy's The Shadow. I wish it got a BD release already. I don't even have it on DVD cos it was never in widescreen.

Dammit, me too!
Shiwan Khan: In three days, the entire world will hear my roar, and willingly fall subject to the lost empire of Shan Kahn. That is a lovely tie, by the way. May I ask where you acquire it
Lamont Cranston: Brooks Brothers.
Shiwan Khan: Is that mid-town.
Lamont Cranston: 45th and Madison. You are a barbarian.
Shiwan Khan: Thank you. We both are.

Re: Quentin Tarantino to Direct THE SHADOW?
I'm huge fan of both The Shadow and The Phantom films. Baldwin was great in the role and the film was very cool. That said, I'm not one who gets all bitchy about remakes so I'll check it out.
I will admit that I don't like QT's stuff as much as others here. In fact, I can only think of 2 of his films that I really liked. So I'm hoping he doesn't fuck up The Shadow.

I haven't seen the Phantom since it first came out but I could never get into it. But that's another one I wouldn't mind seeing a remake of, perhaps with less mystical laser skulls?

I loved The Phantom. The "mystical laser skulls" were part of the charm.

Re: Quentin Tarantino to Direct THE SHADOW?
I just finished the new Carl Hiaasen novel, and one of the minor characters in it is an actor who's been cast as a necrophiliac surfer in a Taratino film, an homage to old AIP monster and beach movies. I'd love to see that done for real.

I hope he doesn't move forward with this. I would like to see any of his other 3 potential projects materialize instead.

I know Universal wants to stay far away from it but hopefully if this ever happens they'll finally release the original in friggin widescreen in conjunction with the reboot or w/e it'll be called.

I can't help but laugh when sites report on what he's doing next, or when they list "Kill Bill 3" and an "Inglourious" prequel as potential upcoming projects.
I will only believe what Quentin is doing next when he's calling "action" on the first shot.

THE SHADOW
Pajiba hears tell of Quentin Tarantino taking on the film, which has been rumored to be a project for David Slade and Sam Raimi. Of course, they did put a giant grain of salt tag in the article. MTV News called Tarantino's rep, who said, "There is no truth to this story."

Exactly. This is the same guy that has been linked not just to the Shadow, but also James Bond and Friday the 13th movies before as well, with nothing coming of it. I'd like to see him tackle something else personally, but of course will see anything he does.
