Still, for just a mindless, fun action picture it delivers but I'd be interested to hear what the original ending was. Jolie was decent and I appreciated that a lot of the action was done with practical effects but definitely check your brain at the door. 3.5/5
That'd be the Expendables....

Re: Salt (Noyce, 2010) — The Reviews Thread

I gave it 3.5/5 stars.

The first two acts were great, but then it got to the point that you could see everything coming a mile away (for me it started when she drew the venom from the spider. From there the story was telegraphed.

The actors were great. The action was great. The directing was (reasonably) great.

I'd watch it again as a renter, but won't be buying it on day one... Maybe when it hits the bargain bin.

I wonder if they'll continue the series.... But I'd rather have another Lara Croft film.

Come on, Scott. It's your poll and you're not even reading it correctly. He didn't vote 0 stars. He picked the option you provided for someone that has no interest in seeing the movie.

Did this movie really warrant it's own reviews thread? I guess I just don't see too many DVDTalkers seeing it.

Re: Salt (Noyce, 2010) — The Reviews Thread

Saw it. Idiotic, preposterous, yet still entertaining. Jolie really carried this movie to the best of her ability and then some. I guess after having to do so much thinking last week with Inception it was kind of jolting to be watching something where any true thought makes the movie fall apart.

The only way I see this movie going from average to above average is if one maybe looks at it like a comic book heroine origins movie. Through that lens, it actually works well. However, as a regular I give it a B-, and that's only because I like Jolie and think she did a good job elevating the material.

Re: Salt (Noyce, 2010) — The Reviews Thread

Saw this yesterday. As some have said, I really enjoyed the actors and definitely the action. Dumb, entertaining fun.

I really like Kurt Wimmer, but in terms of writing, this film definitely seemed a little less crazy/fun compared to his other efforts.

I have to give the film tons of credit for getting me to laugh like a madman when I saw:

Fun movie... Sure pretty much saw everything a mile away, but thats part of the enjoyment. Jolie sure can play this type of roll well, and wouldnt mind seeing a sequel.

I actually can't picture Cruise in the title role for this flick (Edwin Salt), even tho it shares a lot with MI.

Re: Salt (Noyce, 2010) — The Reviews Thread

So...if a sequel comes along, will she still go by the name Salt, or would show maybe go with something else, like maybe Sugar?

Also, if the break-up of Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt is a gaping wound, does that make Angelina Jolie Salt in the Wound............?

I think the original ending did not involve him being one of the Russian "sleepers" because he was pissed about his new lines.

Re: Salt (Noyce, 2010) — The Reviews Thread

Caught it tonight. I thought it was fairly enjoyable, but nothing particularly special about it. The pace was pretty quick and the movie moved along quickly from one action scene to the next, and Angelina does a pretty good job as a spy. I could see Tom Cruise in the role, unlike others here. I didn't really see where they were going with it mid-way through so it was intriguing, but it ended up fairly predictable by the end which was a disappointment. Regarding the end...

Spoiler:
Maybe i'm missing something, but wouldn't the President obviously point out that it was Liev's character that was the Russian spy and add credence to Salt's story? Seemed odd with the way Chiwetel Ejiofor's CIA guy was questioning Salt at the end.

Pretty much just a female Bourne-light. I doubt i'd buy it on Blu-ray or anything, but it entertained me in the theater.

Re: Salt (Noyce, 2010) — The Reviews Thread

i saw it last night. I rated it 3 stars. I felt that the action was pretty good, but overall, the story had a few holes. I was thinking the same thing fumanstan was regarding the ending.

After we got out of the theater, the GF said 7/10, I said 6/10.

Spoiler:
Yes, that bugged me. Although does Salt know that or is the President already out by the time she gets there?

Also, as I mentioned in my review but can fully elaborate here, it really bugged me that she didn't punch Ejiofor back after he undid her shackle. I think the audience would have gone nuts for that and it would have been funny, not to mention lent credence to his "she escaped!" story. Real missed opportunity there.
As for the ending...
Spoiler:
...the most logical guess is that the original would have Liev a regular old good guy, but then what? Ejiofor the villain?

Re: Salt (Noyce, 2010) — The Reviews Thread

I think the biggest missed opportunity with his movie was

Spoiler:
them making Salt into a full blown heroine after they killed her husband. I really feel the whole "pining away over losing someone special" driven character has been done way too much. As someone else said, it would have been cool for this movie to have some balls and halfway through discover we are watching an espionage flick from the villain's POV. I would have loved it if the movie ended with her more or less triggering the end of the world and getting away.

I saw the movie last Friday and the ending that fumanstan and others here have talked about bothered me as well.

Re: Salt (Noyce, 2010) — The Reviews Thread

Just your typical dumb and yet fun summer movie. Completely preposterous. ESPECIALLY the scene where Jolie jumps down the elevator shaft landing again and again on the side. That said, I did enjoy it and would also give it a 3/5 stars or a 7/10 (my usual rating system). Probably Jolie's best action film behind "Wanted". Plus she looked great. Better than in "Wanted", where she looked anorexic.

I don't get why the movie started with Angelina in her undies but we never really get a full look

Really? Media-manufactured movie star darling in Jolie + "dumb-mindless-summer-film" which is the DVD Talk motto. I would think this would be tailor made for the DVD Talk crowd.
