Why would you be surprised by his early work? Did you mean impressed?? Anyway, I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. Because I thought he knocked it out of the park with most of those films. Can you imagine going up against DeNiro? And at such a young age. Not once, but twice. And he held his own. Both "This Boy's Life" and "Marvin's Room". I thought he was just amazing in those.

He was never really hyped back then. I have no idea what you're talking about. He didn't receive much hype at all until Titanic.

Whoa..whoa..calm down Daytripper...lol
I remember Gilbert Grape being pretty popular. That's where I heard of him. Once Titanic hit I saw that in theaters. I thought he was alright, the story was never as great as it was remembered. BUT I remember being amazed seeing The Titanic..well...be there and later sink. Looked really good...still holds up visually in good chunks.

Even DiCaprio understands that. I remember an interview he did around the time of Gangs of New York and Catch Me If You Can where he said Titanic was a mistake -- he turned down the role of Dirk Diggler for the chance to work with Cameron, even though he knew Boogie Nights had the better script. And with Titanic, he put himself in a position where he couldn't make the type of films he wanted -- if he tried, a million teenage girls would turn out on opening weekend expecting Titanic II and be disappointed, while the people who would be interested would dismiss the film because it stars some teeny-bopper heart-throb. That's why he lay low after Titanic, waiting for the movie to fade from memory, and why he wishes he'd done Boogie Nights instead.

Regardless of what he was before. He's, I think most of us can agree, a solid actor. And worth the hype of what he is now.

Looks like TS3 has the #1 movie boxoffice gross nailed down, it may hit $400 million or very close to it.
I took my son to see "Predators", but the price has now gone up to $10 a ticket in my area. Looks like I will won't be going to that many movies any more with the family, $35 after ticket and food is way to much for 2 people.
Personally I have seen 6 or 7 movies this year, and I think I will see only one more the rest of the year - Harry Potter.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice looked cool to me when I saw the trailer, but when I saw the star was that guy I don't even know his name and I don't mean Nic Cage. The young actor that plays nothing but nerds.
I can't stand him.

boy the movies pegged to be 'fanboy' hits like A-Team and Predators have really bombed this summer in terms of expectations... doesn't bode well for "Expendables" either. I wouldn't have thought that terrible-looking Karate Kid remake would do best financially of all these '80s reworks.

Clearly this thread is off the rails, so I'll just further that by saying Leo's role in Inception seems tailor-made for Tom Cruise. It was only in the last few minutes that I saw DiCaprio bringing something to the role that Cruise couldn't have done. Anyway, loved the movie. Plus the Expendables preview makes me think it will be a bigger hit than people expect.

Good#s for Inception. I see it getting good word of mouth with certain people, but not that great with the Middle-America crowd. I could easily see the average joe lambasting it to no end and telling other people it isn't worth their time.
I have to say, I wonder how long movies like the classics made in 40s and 50s (Citizen Kane, Maltese Falcon, Double Indemnity) would have gone over if audiences back then had today's mindset.

I wish Inception would have bombed and The Sorceror's Apprentice would have done better. i seen both this weekend and Apprentice was the better movie.

Even with Predators low budget, I don't see another one happening. The AVP's sucked whatever life was left in the series, which is the risk you run cranking out bad installments for a quick buck. (even though they're separate, it's still the Aliens/Predators name brand)
