Which do you prefer more: Cutthroat Island or Pirates of the Caribbean?

Which do you prefer more: Cutthroat Island or the Pirates of the Caribbean flicks?

I just blind-bought Cutthroat Island on blu-ray the other day since I never saw the film. But i'm surprised at what a fun, exciting and entertaining film it is. I think I prefer the big-budget action movies of the 1990s (as cheesy as they may be) than to the big-budget action movies of today, because when a film got a huge budget then, they actually built real sets and went to real locations. I really don't appreciate the expensive CGI-animated set overkill in today's action flicks. And furthermore, I was pretty bored watching all of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. I'll take Mathew Modine over Johnny Depp & Orlando Bloom. And I'll take a wierd-looking yet attractive Geena Davis over scrawny Keira Knightly.

The history behind Cutthroat Island is pretty sad. As I watch it now, I thought that Geena Davis and Modine were enough star power in 1995, but when I read about it now, it turns out that they weren't big name enough. When I think of Cutthroat Island, I think of it being around the same time as their peak years of Thelma & Louise, A League of their Own, Memphis Belle, Pacific Heights, Wind, Married to the Mob, but I guess that both Davis and Modine were dated by the time Cutthroat Island came out...

If you ignore the atrocious sequels, Pirates of the Caribbean by a landslide.

I never saw Cutthroat Island, but I thought everyone considered it total trash, and assumed this thread was a joke. Will find out for myself if I ever open my $5 blu-ray. Love Geena Davis, an ex looked just like her back in their primes.

I don't agree with all your opinions, but this is the only one to which I take exception.

Dead Man's Chest and At Worlds End are awesome, so I dunno what your talking about. And to answer the question, Pirates of the Caribbean.

That all boils down to whether you like Reese's Pieces vs. Coca-Cola

Re: Which do you prefer more: Cutthroat Island or Pirates of the Caribbean?

Mac and Me wins because of the wheelchair sequence
Cutthroat Island wins because it didn't have two terrible sequels

(now swap those and they're my picks, tho the Pirates sequels really did suck ass).

Yeah, I actually liked them better then the original. I found the Davy Jones story much more interesting then the Black Pearl story. I guess I'm in the minority. I feel like Ash Ketchum...

How is a restaurant better than a brutal Monica Bellucci movie?

haha!

I didn't even know that there was some debate-worthy topic over which Caribbean film was the best. I think of Pirates of the Caribbean as one long 7-hour movie.

Re: Which do you prefer more: Cutthroat Island or Pirates of the Caribbean?

Both Cutthroat Island and Pirates of the Caribbean were films that tried to get pirates popular again in cinema. Cutthroat Island failed. Pirates worked.

That's why they are both connected.

While the two sequels were filmed back-to-back, the first movie was a stand-alone story.
