Single Movies that Feel Like Two
This is a thread I've been meaning to make for a while but never got around to it. Some movies have a second half that is so different from the first, either stylistically, plot wise, or mood, that it feels almost like a separate film or a shortened sequel. Examples that spring to mind:
-Malice (1993) : what starts out looking like a movie about trying to catch a sexual predator turns into a Hitchcock style mystery.
-From Dusk Till Dawn- I think this one stands on its own for people who have seen it. First half-crime movie, second half-vampires.
-Jaws- First half is about a shark terrorizing a New England town. Second half is about three men, who happen to be hunting that shark.
-A Perfect Getaway -
Of course this doesn't always work well, I know Dusk Till Dawn has many detractors, and Michael Bay's Pearl Harbor felt like a movie that tacked on a sequel just to end on a high note.

The first Pirates of the Caribbean felt like a movie and its sequel.

LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring. Hadn't read the novel before seeing the movie. Thought the movie was over when they got out of the mine but it kept going...and going...and going.

Lawrence of Arabia and Armageddon. So much happens and the acts seem to have a lot of distance betwen them. Afterwards, you just kind of forget that you've been sitting there for so long.

Goodfellas on DVD felt this way because I always had to get up and flip the disc when Tommy says, "Where are the shovels?" Even now when I watch it on TV or HD, I feel like I have to pause at that moment.

My vote goes to Million Dollar Baby. The first half is a Rocky-type movie and the second half is a story about how far a someone would go for their friend.

SUPERMAN: The Movie - first half is Krypton/Smallville; second half is Metropolis, and it turns much more toward comedy in the second half (after a very serious tone in the first hour).
