re: Dogtooth (D: Yorgos Lanthimos)

I watched this movie over the weekend after seeing the little clip they showed for the Oscars, it hasn't left my mind since. Everything about the movie was creepy and humerous without being over the top or hokey. It's the best directed movie i've seen in years, probably since There Will Be Blood. You can tell that thought went into every shot, they don't edit around anything. I haven't had a movie affect me like this since A Clockwork Orange, I think that highly of it.

Yeah but see that's the thing and why I hate shows like the Oscars - it got nominated under what category? Best 'foreign' picture or some bullshit like that?? Why not include it in with the REGULAR best pic noms? I only bring this up because your post really got me thinking about how out of structure things can get at award shows.

Out of all of the people I've talked to so far (besides my sorry ass who hasn't seen it yet) they all loved it pretty much just like sauce07.

Because it didn't have enough traction with the people who vote for other categories. Pretty simple really. Dogtooth wasn't some phenomenon like say Crouching Tiger was when it was released.

Right but I meant overall - it's not like a film of this type would ever have a chance based on content alone...no matter how good it was.

Well i just finished watching it. It was certainly one of the more fucked up movies ive ever seen (way more so then say, A Serbian Film), mainly due to the reality of all the scenarios and what not. And i can def see why maybe some of the more conservative academy members were appalled by the film.
and as far as the ending
Spoiler:
im with the consciousnesses that the eldest died in the trunk.

The film is very strange but not really all that hard to follow once you figure out what's going on. The acting is really great and the characters have a very real feeling to them which makes things even more frightening. There is almost no music in the film which adds to the overall eeriness of it. I loved, loved, loved the visuals in the film. It's shot exceptionally well. The film just has a very disturbing feel to it without even taking into account what it's about. It's also very funny. I found myself laughing more than I thought I would.

One of the scariest things about the film is that it doesn't really feel all that removed from reality. Just about everything in the film seems highly plausible in the right circumstances.

I highly recommend Dogtooth to anyone who loves weird-fucked up films. I hate this saying but it's not really for the faint of heart. I found myself cringing on multiple occasions.
I just saw this a coulple of days ago and can't get it out of my head. I agree with your assessment. You compare it to David Lynch & Todd Solonz but I would also throw in Michael Heneke & Lars Von Trier.
