Real Steel (Levy, 2011) - Hugh Jackman trains robot boxers
Synopsis;
IMDb
In addition to Jackman, the film will also feature Evangeline Lilly, Kevin Durand and Anthony Mackie. The release date is currently November 18, 2011.

Not sure how Shawn Levy got the gig, but the first promo pic above looks pretty cool, as staged as it is. It'll be interesting to see what else comes in for this one.
A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future, where the sport of boxing has gone hi-tech, "Real Steel" stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.
In addition to Jackman, the film will also feature Evangeline Lilly, Kevin Durand and Anthony Mackie. The release date is currently November 18, 2011.

This could kick all sorts of ass but seeing Shawn Levy behind the camera is not promising.

Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots - The Movie? The plot sounds like something that would have been a prime candidate for a mid-80's/early-90's DTV release.

USA Today has a set report up already;
I didn't realize that Spielberg was involved with this. Again, I'm not sure about Levy working on an action movie, but he does have experience with special effects, and this article suggests that he is going for a less-dystopian future than we have been seeing in films lately.
Motion-capture animation is used in the film when the machines are brawling (with boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard working as an adviser on those), but 19 real-life animatronic giants were created for scenes with the human actors.
Levy says that blend was encouraged by Steven Spielberg, an executive producer. (This is a DreamWorks film being released by Disney's Touchstone Pictures.)
"There are some things only visual effects can pull off," Levy says. "But when you give an actor a real thing, in this case a real 8-foot-tall machine, to interact with and do dialogue opposite, you get a more grounded reality to the performance."

I'm game for this. I'll try not to happily laugh when there a Robo Rocky Montage though...they should and at the same time shouldn't have it.

They missed a great opportunity to say "From the Director of Date Night" towards the end of the trailer.
Otherwise, it doesnt look too bad. Good matinee cheese, I'm sure.

I'm in...could use a better trailer but it's good. I like it. Can't wait for a more fleshed out one.

So basically somone not only figured that a movie based on rock e'm sock 'em robots would be a fun idea but actually made what appears to be a a genuinely fun movie based on said concept? I'm in.
