Most iconic or recognizable character?

So, A New Hope was on Spike tonight and it got me thinking about who is the most iconic or recognizable character in movie history.

There are certain people who if you ask anybody in the world who they are, more than likely you'll get the correct answer. Tiger Woods, Muhammad Ali, Babe Ruth, Nelson Mandela are a few.

What movie characters would you say would get the highest percentage of "correct" answers if you polled the world? Basically, who are the most recognizable or iconic characters in the history of film.

My vote would go to Darth Vader. I mean even people that have never seen Star Wars or know the basic plot seem to know the name Darth Vader.

I'm not really talking about characters that the average person knows the backstory of or even what movie they're featured in. Really, I'm just talking about the name, visual depiction and overall essence of the character. It just seems to me that just about anybody in the civilized world could identify Darth Vader even if they've never actually seen Star Wars.

Some others could be Rocky Balboa, Rambo, Vito Corleone, Indiana Jones, Hannibal Lecter.

So, what do you think?

By the way, I figured this question had been asked before and I did multiple searches, but didn't find anything.

The most recognizable movie character, one that everybody around the world would recognize in an instant, isn't even on your list:

My vote would go to Mickey Mouse with Superman and/or Batman (can't decide) being a close second.

I'd have to agree that it's a toss-up between Vader and Superman.
