Universal's Digital Cinema Packages - What's the lowdown?

Here at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, they are going to be showing DePalma's Scarface, but as a DCP - or Digital Cinema Package. The Drafthouse description states "providing the best possible image quality at the highest resolution. We've seen 'em all before in 35mm and love every, single frame...but we think our minds are about to be blown."

I'll be checking out Scarface, but I have no idea if this digital presentation is really a restoration. If so, I hope a Blu Ray release is upcoming.

The Drafthouse will also be showing Harold and Maude, Hausu, and Tender Mercies.

Re: Universal's Digital Cinema Packages - What's the lowdown?

A digital cinema package is how a studio distributes a film to theaters that use DLP projectors, meaning the screening of Scarface shown at the Alamo Drafthouse will be from a 2K or 4K source file.

Sony's The Hot Ticket uses / used (if they even still do presentations) DCP to present its showings.

This will not be something like a Fantom event where the theaters use a satellite/streaming feed to present material that looks nothing more like a DVD projected on a big screen.
