From everything I've read, this movie is just sick for the sake of being sick. It does not leave the impact that films like Irreversible and Martyrs do. I guess that's the whole point of it though. Not only does it generate controversy and attract more viewers, but those who see it can wear it as a badge of honor. I'm all for freedom of speech, but the shit that is supposedly in this film pushes things pretty far. From what I've read, the ending is repulsive. For those who are interested, this is what people are saying happens.
Obviously, I'm spoiling the ending so read at your own risk....

It left the same impact on me as Martyrs did. Which is none at all.
That main controversial scene might have been more shocking if the dummy didn't look so damn fake.

Saw it some time ago. Meh. If they were aiming for disturbing, they missed.

it was hard for me to invest any sympathy into the characters when the film was really trying its hardest to look so cool and testosterone-driven. i couldn't really buy into its political message because of this either, as it was seemingly just an excuse to expose fucked up shit on-screen and try to raise the bar tremendously (which it did only in myth, but failed in experience).

for me to be disturbed by a film, i have to have recurring thoughts about it long after i've seen it. i forgot about 'A Serbian Film' until i saw the title of this thread.

7. A SERBIAN FILM
Of every film on this list, the one that you’re least likely to have an opportunity to ever see, is A SERBIAN FILM. This is a fantastic, brilliant film – that given time, will eventually outgrow the absurd reactions of people that think it is a far harder film than it actually is.
This is a movie about a male Porn Star in Serbia, their Evan Stone if you will, who has retired from the business to raise a family with his beautiful wife and child. As he’s seduced back into the business by a financial incentive that would ensure his family’s security – he takes a gig for a Porn Auteur that nobody has ever heard of. A former child psychologist.
The film reeks of David Fincher & Paul Schrader. The film also echoes THE HANGOVER – in the sense that it does concern trying to piece together what exactly happened, since a character wakes up with little memory of what ensued… and he has to rediscover what did happen.
It is a down right shame that this film has no U.S. distribution of any kind, and while I do understand the why – I absolutely disagree. This is a film that absolutely deserves an NC-17, but that absolutely does not deserve to be unseen, which too often, is the end result of an NC-17 rating. As a result, no one will pick it up. It needs someone like who Harvey Weinstein used to be. This is powerful, uncompromised filmmaking for an Adult audience – and one of the best films of 2010.
Also Harry defending putting it on his list on twitter
People that think they have a bead on A SERBIAN FILM, need to shut the fuck up until they see it. The film is an incredibly great film, where everything feels correct in the context of the film. It is never exploitive

Re: A Serbian Film (aka Srpski Film) (2010)
I does have US distro though and they are editing for a R rating also. I assume ALOT of cutting and dialogue replacement (dubbing into english will happen) can earn it an R and a runtime around 70 mins lol. Lionsgate did a very similar deal with Murder-Set-Pieces, they cut 20+ mins and got an R for it
