I expected Blues Brothers to be at least 2nd in this poll, possibly behind Ghostbusters.

Re: Best Film by original SNL Actors (Ackroyd, Murray, Belushi, Chase)

It seems like John Belushi was sadly under-used, while all his friends were out there making film history. Aside from "The Blues Brothers," where was he for Caddyshack? Seems it would be more fitting to have had him playing "Carl."

I know Belushi died early (1982), but would he have made a cameo in Vacation? I know he was "slated" for Ghostbusters, but that's easy to say when someone is already dead. Did those guys not really like Belushi, which forced the actor to resort to Speilberg films that went nowhere? Maybe they were afraid of him "stealing the movie," as he did in Animal House. Maybe Dan Ackroyd was the only "friend" who could stomach him, which is why Belushi's only co-star from SNL was always Ackroyd (1941, All You Need Is Cash, Neighbors and, of course, The Blues Brothers). Coincidence?

And maybe Ackroyd's association (and acceptance) of John Belushi blackballed him from being in the fims his former SNL co-stars were in. Funny that Ackroyd only started showing up with his SNL co-stars after Belushi's demise. Conspiracist?

... who, after Jaws and Close Encounters, was only the BIGGEST film director at the time and every actor in Hollywood would have JUMPED OUT OF THEIR SKIN for a chance to work with him?

(I'm sure no working actor was ever "forced" to work with Spielberg)

I grew up watching Three Amigos on an endless loop, so that's always going to be my fav. But most of these rank as some of my top comedies of all-time.

I'll have to check out Three Amigos one of these days. Everyone who's seen it says it is funny (despite Sam Kinison's scene being cut out of it - thanks Chevy, you prick!)

Isn't "Seems Like Old Times" the one where the end of the film has Goldie Hawn in the woods, in the rain, and she comes upon a log cabin, so she goes there for shelter, and lo and behold - her old boyfriend Chevy is there, and the end screen-shot is Goldie giving her famous smile.

is that the film? I think I only saw that part of it. Whatever lead up to that ending, I have no clue. Guess I have to check that film out, as well!

Check list:
01: Three Amigos
02: Seems Like Old Times

Yes. Yes it is. You'll be craving chicken pepperoni as soon as you're done watching it. But not before you have your feet scraped.

Never heard this story. IMDB says the scenes were cut by Landis?

Anyway, I had to go with Animal House, but almost all of these are great movies.

Cut by Landis, but Landis was influenced by Chevy Chase, who feared that Kinison's scenes would steal the movie, so he gave Landis some kind of ultamadium. Landis ultimately chose Chevy over the yet unproven Kinison.

Bullz-eye: I know his scenes were deleted, but I read that Sam originally had some scenes in “Three Amigos”.

Bill Kinison: Yeah, we shot it in Arizona, and he had actually had several scenes. He played a mountain man that just wouldn’t die. They shoot him and he wouldn’t die; they stab him and he won’t die; they drown him in a river, from which Sam caught pneumonia, and he won’t die. But Chevy Chase, after seeing the dailies and everything, said he wouldn’t finish the movie if Lorne Michaels left Sam in, because he felt like Sam stole the movie. So they still had to pay Sam but he was never in any scenes that was released. I told Lorne, “What, Chevy Chase runs your business now and everything?” And he goes, “Bill, we’re into this movie. What am I going to do?” But, yeah, I guess no one will ever see that footage, but it was hilarious at the time.

Odd. There's no reason not to put out a deleted scene at this point. Three Amigos is what it is at this point. No deleted scene is going to change people's perception of the film now.

Buttmunker 03-23-10 01:15 PM

Re: Best Film by original SNL Actors (Ackroyd, Murray, Belushi, Chase)

I agree the scene should be shown in "Deleted Scenes." It could only make the purchase of the film better, and shame on Chevy if that story is even remotely true. It's no secret in Hollywood that Chevy is kind of a douche. I don't doubt the story.

Buttmunker 03-23-10 01:16 PM

Re: Best Film by original SNL Actors (Ackroyd, Murray, Belushi, Chase)

And it makes me mad that Chevy would hold his foot down on Kinison's head in an attempt to drown out the man's career. Would Chevy have liked that if someone did that to him when he was first starting out?

Do unto others as you would like done unto you, Chev. Words of wisdom for a peaceful world.

That makes me hate Chevy even more, but doesn't surprise me. I could easily see Sam stealing a lot of the film with a character like that.

In addition to "Lost in Translation," my favorite, and I'm surprised no one else has mentioned it, is "Rushmore."

BLUES BROTHERS, hands-down. Aykroyd and Belushi at their peak. A cause to warm our hearts. A plot that builds and builds and builds to a fantastic and suspenseful comic action climax recalling, for me, one of my childhood favorites, IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD. And an unbelievable supporting cast of great American music-makers, including Aretha Franklin, James Brown, John Lee Hooker and the great man himself, Cab Calloway. Not to mention all the great comic supporting actors, including Henry Gibson, Kathleen Freeman, Carrie Fisher, Charles Napier, and Jeff Morris.
