It was only a matter of time...


In late-2008, we told you that Sherwood Schwartz and his son Lloyd Schwartz had signed a deal to bring Gilligan’s Island to the big screen.But we haven’t really heard anything about the big screen adaptation for over a year, until now. Variety reports that Warner Bros is developing the feature film with Atlas Entertainment. Charles Roven and Richard Suckle are on board to produce, and screenwriter Brad Copeland has been hired to write the screenplay.
Copeland has a background in television, breaking in as a staff writer on News Radio, and moving on to Arrested Development, Grounded For Life and My Name is Earl. Not a bad resume, until you get to his lone film credit — Wild Hogs… ugh. He also wrote the upcoming Yogi Bear film, and is penning the Flight of the Navigator remake. Roven produced Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Get Smart, and The International.
Copeland’s take on the project is being kept under wraps, but it is hard to imagine that it would stray far from that of the original series. I loved Gilligan’s Island as a kid, and am not against the idea of a re-imagining of the series… But it seems to me that LOST is our generation’s version of the 1960’s television series. Actually, if you watch the Gilligan’s Island movie, it very vaguely parallels the first four seasons of Lost (I’ve embedded that entire movie below). Anything closer to the source material would just be too silly (I’m imagining something like The Flintstones movie… ick).

When Schwartz broke the news at the Beverly Hills induction ceremony of Television Academy’s Hall of Fame on December 9th 2008, he told TV Guide that he wanted Michael Cera to play Gilligan and Beyonce Knowles to play Ginger.

I'm such a Gilligan's Island fanatic, that I'd be sure to catch this in the theater. Though I will readily admit I anticipate walking out of the theater wondering why I wasted money on it.

Maybe this will lead to a dvd release of Harlem Globtrotters & Castaways on GI. .. and Gilligan's Planet... and the badly coloized first season...

Jason Statham as the Skipper, Megan Fox as Ginger, and Ellen Page as Mary Ann. And Ben Kingsley as the Professor.
Oliver Platt as Thurston Howell and Paris Hilton as Mrs. Howell. I'll leave it up to the rest of you clowns to choose between Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill or Michael Cera for Gilligan.

And it's gotta have dinosaurs and kung fu.

I think they should make the cast of the Expendables do this...

Seth Rogen as The Skipper and Cera as Gilligan= something that most definitely won't be comic gold.

Please, someone stop this before it starts shooting.

I like this idea but...would they still be fighting on island and instead of the plot of surviving on the island would it be them trying to find out who the fuck sabotaged their ship and now they're out to kick ass?

Cera? Count me out.

Hell, I don't care who's in it. Count me out anyways.

Jay Baruchel as Gilligan.
Jonah Hill as the Skipper.
Adam Sandler as the Professor.
Bill Murray as Mr. Powell (if you can't convince him with enough young hipster girls or cash, substitute him for Dan Aykroyd or Harold Ramis).
The two love interests from Superbad as Ginger and Mary Ann.

In this version, they never make it to the island. Actually, there's no storm. The three hour boat ride goes just fine, it's just three hours of dick jokes on a boat.

Agreed on Hathaway, but they should get someone even remotely attratcive to play Mary Ann.

Agreed, and I could see Anna Kendrick as Mary Ann. Hey, the names almost rhyme.

Kevin Smith as The Skipper and Jason Mewes as Gilligan.

Remember when the cast of Rosanne did an episode centering on Gilligan's Island with a boyish Jackie playing the role of Gilligan?

Yeah, well this movie will suck just as much as that did.

Damnit ... I was just about to post that ... Cedric the Entertainer as the Skipper; Beyonce as Ginger; Sanaa Lathan as Mary Ann; Chris Tucker as Gilligan; Morgan Freeman as Mr. Howell; Gabariegh Sidibe (or however you spell it) as Mrs. Howell; and Robert Downey Jr. as the Professor

Freeman won't do Gilligan's Island... but Danny Glover will.

It worked for "The Honeymooners"!
