If it helps Kevin Smith any, it appears the media are putting the blame on Bruce Willis for the movie not making much.

And Pineapple Express fucking rules. James Franco's performance is still better than any other in an Apatow flick.

It's a good thing Avatar passed the $700 million mark this weekend as it'll lose a lot of the 3D theaters to Alice in Wonderland starting next weekend. Avatar will get to $710 million by next Friday, but will it have enough steam to get to $730 million or even $750 million by the time it's out of the theater and released for home video in late June.

I'm just wondering if Avatar will be a big deal 10 years from now. Titanic made a fortune and is one of the most forgettable movies ever made. It was kind of a product of its time. An event that was interesting when it came out, but the overall movie was so bland that it is unwatchable now. Avatar kind of fits that mold as well. I enjoyed the experience in Imax in 3D, but I would never buy Avatar on home video and the story like Titanic was pretty mediocre overall.

My dad and I contributed another $20 to Avatar's gross this past weekend. We both wanted to see it again before Alice came out this week. Still hasn't lost its appeal to me.

I don't think Avatar will have staying power with me, either. It was visually stunning but I found the story to be weak, over all. Titanic was stunning for it's time, but not the best movie over all. I only bought the 10th anniversary set because I got it used (and therefore super cheap...under ten bucks) and the bonus features about the real Titanic seemed to be more interesting than the movie itself.

And in 10 years time people will be cursing Avatar for bringing on a wave of nice looking but ultimately lame 3-D movies.

I agree with this. It was just a lousy love-story set against an epic event in history. There were so many true stories that could have been told but instead we get a bland romance scenario on a boat. Don't get me wrong, the sinking of the ship was pretty cool but other than that, what's the point? I guess what the movie was really missing was the fleshing out of other characters, like First Officer Murdoch for example.

I already feel that way now.

I dunno, 3D would likely still be around in 10 years without Avatar, and decidedly many are already lame, so I don't see that changing. In the end really, Avatar may get the complaints, but it was inevitable.

Amazing-- as of yesterday, by a little over $65,000, Avatar is again number 2 at the box office, followed by Cop Out and The Crazies.

$800 million seems like a long road, especially with Alice in Wonderland coming this Friday, but I wonder if Avatar will have enough staying power to make it.

I went to Avatar last night for the last 3D showing (in that theater at least) before it's pulled for Alice. While the show wasn't sold it, it had to be 75% filled. Will Avatar be re-released in 3D? If not, I wonder how much money they're leaving on the table by having to pull the movie?

About lame 3-d movies...

Haven't there always been lame and good 3-d movies? Same as the fact that there have always been lame and good 2-d movies.

My perception of Avatar's film and technology breakthroughs is that it's pushing cinema into a whole new phase. Eventually, I think that all new films will be shot and released in 3-d? Avatar's tech makes what was difficult to easier and more possible (albiet complex) and isn't that why Avatar is a 'game changer'?



Eventually people will get past the point where 3-d is crazy and pops out at you, and it'll all become more like Avatar's more subtle approach. So in 30 years, when everything is immersive and we watch all movies in 3-d (they will probably just be called movies then), won't movies be the same a before...good or bad?

kevin's bread and butter has always been making the money on dvd sales and merchandise
but this one may actually profit in the theaters

I just saw it on 3/4. I didn't help much with the box office take though because I got a free ticket because one of the theatres it was supposed to be in did not have a working 3 d projector and I had to wait until the next showing an hour later.
