So BAD they are FUNNY Horror/Sci-fi films - need recommendations please
Hi All
My friends and I meet up for a pizza & beer horror night every month and I need some recommendations for really bad horror & sci-fi films from the past 30 years, but they have to be so bad that they are funny...which is not an easy task. Most bad horror films are just plain boring. It takes a true gem to turn out hilariously bad.
So far we have really enjoyed Troll 2 and Rock n Roll Nightmare, so that should give you an idea of the type of bad films we are looking for.
I just discovered another film, Alien 3000 (Unseen Evil 2) which I recommend highly, it is one of the funniest ever...think Ed Wood if he was around today. Some of the worst CGI I have ever seen in a film, along with incredibly cheap special effects, piss poor dialogue and a really bad sword fight scene between Lorenzo Llamas and an alien.
Anyway, if you have any recommendations, it would be appreciated, thanks.

If you liked Alien 3000, Megashark vs Giant Octopus could be up your alley (has Llamas as well). It's on Netflix on demand if you want to get a sneak peak.
Naked Space would be a good pick too, and I get a kick out of Battlefield Earth.

Thanks starman9000. I will check out Megashark.
I should add that I would like films that are done seriously...it is hard to laugh at a bad film that is trying to be funny, no matter how bad the jokes are, which is why I never found films such as Attack of the Killer Tomatoes even remotely enjoyable.

For Toho special effects Japanese films:
Sayonara Jupiter (this is truly the worst, and unintentionally funny)
War In Space (70's fashions of the future!)
For 50's stuff,
Anything by Ed Wood
You can always go for Mystery Science Theater 3000 too.

Dunno if these qualify but Chopping Mall; The Stuff; and Killer Klowns from Outer Space are a few that come to mind.

Thanks
Chopping Mall was one of the films we watched and it was fun. The Stuff and Killer Klowns are too good for us however

I think the lower the budget, the better the possibility of it it being bad/funny...probably why we get the biggest laughs from films that go straight to DVD. The problem is there are so many straight to DVD horror/sci-fi films that it is a real job to go through them finding the jewel among them. Which is why I get so excited when I find a film like Alien 3000.

Sayonara Jupiter is great because it's played stone-cold serious. They really thought they were making some 2001-esque epic Sci-Fi art film. But between the space hippies and the zero-G love scene, there's plenty of laughs to be had.

"Avia Vampire Hunter" is horrendous, but we had a BLAST watching it because we couldn't stop laughing. It's inept in every way and some of the dialogue is just too good to be true.

Boa vs. Python is pretty damn unintentionally funny. I thought A Sound of Thunder was hilarious, but I know others that just thought it was bad and boring. I don't know if video stores would still have it, but a couple years ago some friends and I rented Gingerbread Man. Gary Busey plays a serial killer that blows a bunch of people away in a bakery. A witch somehow gets his ashes after he's executed and uses them to make a gingerbread man cookie, which in turn comes to life and kills a bunch of people. It was pretty damn funny, but you about have to read the plot description on the back of the box, as large portions of the plot are left out with no explanation in the film itself.

I think The Deadly Spawn is just plain awesome.
My vote for "so bad it's good" goes to The Howling III: The Marsupials. Just look at the title. Towards the end it drags a bit, but most of the movie is solidly hilarious and the last scene is amazing.
I watched this with a group of friends and we were all on the floor dying. We still quote it all the time and have in-jokes tied to characters and parts of the movie.

I would say Rob Zombie's Halloween II, but that's more of an example of "so awful it's awful." I think someone should make an edit of the movie that has Laurie Strode dropping the F-Bomb as all of her dialogue(i.e. that's all she knows how to say), which isn't too far from what it actually was, but might be more amusing.

Wild Zero (arguably, the movie is awesome) and play the drinking game.
Holiday themed:
Thankskilling
Jack Frost
Silent Night Deadly night series
Creature features:
Grizzly
Day of the Animals
Food of the Goods
Night of the Lepus
Some of the Troma Entertainment films may be a little too intentionally bad to meet your requirements but there's a lot of gold there.

The Wicker Man remake. It's so bad that it's actually funnier than most comedies. Oh, and make sure you watch the director's cut.

here's a few,
the spookies- cat man, grim reaper, muckmen. zombies and assorted monsters- deserves the same status as troll 2
creatures from the abyss- insanely funny
rats night of terror
zombie 90- I don't even know where to begin
shriek of the mutilated
and I wouldn't say this is a "bad" film but how about killer klowns from outer space?
I recommend looking into the website badmovies.org, lots of gems there.

Some that immediately jump to my mind:
Hell of the Living Dead (1980) - aka Virus and a dozen other names that these Italian crapfests seem to have, probably so people accidentally watch them again despite experiencing the horror already. Probably funnier than most intentional horror comedies. My favorite scene features perhaps the dumbest guy in the history of zombie movies:
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/3psLpn7cqFs&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/3psLpn7cqFs&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Pieces (1982) - It's from the director from the equally horrible (and MST3K'ed) "Pod People", so you know it's good! Check out this amazing acting ...

Not to mention to mention it features the most random ninja attack I've ever seen in a movie (and I've seen a handful).
And talking about ninjas, I don't know if there's a legit DVD release but Ninja 3: The Domination is classic. A cross between a ninja movie, the Exorcist, and Flashdance ... what more needs to be said! And of course, there's no connection to Ninjas 1 and 2 (besides Sho Kasugi, playing different roles). Made by creative team that brought you "Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo". Check out the opening scene, in which we learn that if you're golfing and a ninja crushes your ball ... just accept the penalty and play on. Do NOT mess with the ninja.

My chicky and I just caught Terminators on the Syfy channel over the weekend. I believe it's an Asylum film. Played perfectly straight, but with such awful acting, effects, editing and plot holes that it winds up being highly entertaining.
