Is "FOUL PLAY" a classic?

Released in 1978, starring Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn, this mystery-comedy film was a favorite of my family, so I'm biased towards it. It wasn't a blockbuster, but it was a hit. It had some good laughs, and it had some suspense. The oddest thing about it was Chevy Chase as a "serious leading man/love interest." Sure, he played for laughs, too, but it was his attempt to see how receptive his fan-base could be for "serious Chevy" (I think this was right after he quit SNL).

I recently saw the film the other day, and I think it aged pretty well. But is this film "a classic?"

A classic? Absolutely not. Not even close.

Re: Is "FOUL PLAY" a classic?

I would say it probably deserves to be at least a modest "classic" (although I am partial to Seems Like Old Times), but I don't think enough people remember it well for it to qualify. It used to get played on TV quite a bit throughout the 80s but it seems to have fallen off the radar in recent years.

I watched Seems Like Old Times a few months ago for the first time in about 15 years. It was horrible. I couldn't believe how bad the movie was.

No. Seems Like Old Times totally owns Foul Play.

I propose that the terms 'classic', 'pretentious', and 'overrated' be permanently banned from the DVDTalk forums.

Not a classic, but a favorite nonetheless. Albinos, midgets and Chevy Chase is a formula that is guaranteed to work.

Chevy Chase is miscast, but overall it's an enjoyable movie; I'd be hard pressed to call it a classic, though.

I have a very vivid, cool memory of seeing this in a theater back when it was new and have liked it ever since. I couldn't call it a classic though.

That Albino dude scared the hell out of me as a kid and Goldie never looked better. It's a popular movie amongst my family. HBO always seems to play this every other month.

For as much screen time the "albino" had, I just noticed for the first time that he had not one word of dialogue. His script was easy, I reckon. It was blank. lol.

No film Chevy Chase was involved in can be considered a "classic." His SNL episodes, on the other hand, are another matter.

Yeah, fail. Sorry. Even if you questioned the relative merit of Fletch, Caddyshack is beyond reasonable debate as a comedy classic.

For me, his second best has always been Funny Farm, but it has never been as popular as it deserved to be.

No. Just no. "Goldie Hawn" and "classic" should never be used in the same post.

Dudley Moore WAS Austin Powers before Mike Myers stole it.

Foul Play is a classic in much the same way that Night Shift is a classic.
