Mr. Ketchum's statement can mean one of two things:
1)He is completely ignorant of the movie landscape and thinks of no other opinions than his own.
OR
2) He actually has a real life outside of this forum and doesn't obsess over movies' grosses. He might actually spend time focusing on more important things and whatever statements he makes are done with the knowledge he can attain within the time he feels adequate for this kind of stuff.

I guess the biggest factor is that the holiday fell in the day of Friday -

It's funny how they doubted Avatar. Same thing happened with Titanic when it came out: over budget, took long time to make, released during the Holidays. Now it has legs just like most of Cameron's movies. Pretty hard to do with so much competition, which makes it even more impressive.

Hollywood also seemed to be offering good ol' spectacle to moviegoers. "Avatar" grossed $8.8 million in IMAX theaters, actually increasing from its opening weekend. IMAX chairman and president Greg Foster said they were operating essentially at capacity.
"There is no context," said Foster. "It's so far beyond where we've ever been. It's not eking past a record, it's shattering it."

This one was my all time fave:
Imagine what he would have thought had Cameron cast Jason Statham and Megan Fox...

(One of the fun things about this board is finding the fanboys' weak points and then pressing their buttons repeatedly to get them riled up. The downside, of course, is that sometimes the fanboys are proven right!)

Re: Box-Office: Christmas Holiday Edition 2009
This truly has been a unique year for movies.
January - two unexpected hits in Taken and Paul Blart: Mall Cop
Six films grossing more than $250 million domestically (which includes the mega successful Hangover)
A $15,000 film making more than $100 million
The Weinsteins finally having a hit with Inglourious Basterds
Franchises and adaptations still rule in 2009, but at least we got Zombieland, which has got the go-ahead to have a sequel.
