"New Moon is this season's Titanic" was, in my opinion, an absolutely inspired piece of surrealism.

Mr. Ketchum's statement can mean one of two things:

1)He is completely ignorant of the movie landscape and thinks of no other opinions than his own.

OR

2) He actually has a real life outside of this forum and doesn't obsess over movies' grosses. He might actually spend time focusing on more important things and whatever statements he makes are done with the knowledge he can attain within the time he feels adequate for this kind of stuff.

Some other interesting numbers:

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime...s/opennot1.htm

Holmes and Alvin scored 2nd and 4th all time of largest openings that did not open #1.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime...s/top12sum.htm

Biggest total DOM of top 12 movies weekend ever.

Expect the same biggest boxoffice day this coming friday - New Year

I guess the biggest factor is that the holiday fell in the day of Friday -

It's funny how they doubted Avatar. Same thing happened with Titanic when it came out: over budget, took long time to make, released during the Holidays. Now it has legs just like most of Cameron's movies. Pretty hard to do with so much competition, which makes it even more impressive.

Hollywood also seemed to be offering good ol' spectacle to moviegoers. "Avatar" grossed $8.8 million in IMAX theaters, actually increasing from its opening weekend. IMAX chairman and president Greg Foster said they were operating essentially at capacity.

"There is no context," said Foster. "It's so far beyond where we've ever been. It's not eking past a record, it's shattering it."

I'd forgotten all about that. That quote is funny.

(One of the fun things about this board is finding the fanboys' weak points and then pressing their buttons repeatedly to get them riled up. The downside, of course, is that sometimes the fanboys are proven right!)

Thank you for giving me the benefit of the doubt. I'll do the same myself and opt for #2.

At least this time Fox was smart enough to not sell half the movie to Paramount.

Paramount is probably still too busy counting all that Transformer money to care.

Re: Box-Office: Christmas Holiday Edition 2009

This truly has been a unique year for movies.

January - two unexpected hits in Taken and Paul Blart: Mall Cop

Six films grossing more than $250 million domestically (which includes the mega successful Hangover)

A $15,000 film making more than $100 million

The Weinsteins finally having a hit with Inglourious Basterds

Franchises and adaptations still rule in 2009, but at least we got Zombieland, which has got the go-ahead to have a sequel.

Too bad they panicked and sold foreign and home video rights to Universal. True they needed the short term cash flow, but now they have losses from NINE to deal with. Yikes.

I don't believe a film that had a 50 million dollar opening, increased in its 2nd weekend.

Thats a great question.

I'm still trying to get her to pose for them. I promised her the lead in a Jason Statham movie and she never got back to me.
