Sherlock Holmes and Alvin 2 are going to take huge chunks out of this weekend. I wouldn't be surprised to see Avatar come in second to Sherlock Holmes.

While I have found it hard to avoid the marketing blitz, not many people seem interested in Sherlock Holmes. I am, but I'm not most people. I am hoping the Alvin movie is a case where people went to the first one, realized how dumb it was, and then the sequel flops (kind of like Pink Panther 2). Avatar is getting good word of mouth, so people will go out of curiosity. Alvin has little more going for it than being a family film at Christmas time.
EDIT: If Holmes beats it, that's fine. If Alvin beats it, I'm going on a rampage.

Whoa, apparently Alvin is only tracking in the mid 40s for the 5 day release...
Sherlock is also tracking in the 40s for its 3 day release.
I'm calling it now, Avatar will be number 1 next weekend.

No way a Sherlock Holmes movie is going to open #1 unless it opens the last week in August. And it has Jude Law in it Mr. Box-Office poison.

And I prey that "Alvin" bombs. And please, no flames or comments such as "Why should you care? My kids want to see it!". I'm all for children's films and entertainment. It just pains me to see shit make money.

Where did you see or read this? The only place I ever read such updates is on boxoffice.com, but they don't have their predictions and tracking for this week up yet. Just curious.

I think race had to do with it. Not hate, but they just didn't want to see a black themed cartoon.

The Blind Side keeps going strong. I would imagine it will do well next week as well with the holidays.

Avatar is going to have stupid legs.
Biggest Sundays outside Summer:
1) $27,860,195 PASSION OF CHRIST
2) $27,846,502 NEW MOON
3) $25,848,463 HP4
4) $24,650,000 AVATAR
The 3 percent sunday drop is unprecedented!
From Variety:
The critically acclaimed "Avatar" posted glowing exits, earning an A or A+ CinemaScore across all demos

This is the movie that could. People didn't think it would clear 100 million, and now it might clear 200 million. That is INSANE for this kind of movie. I think its great counter-programming, because there is really nothing else like it.

I think after this weekend, with the International numbers, and the positive exit scores across all demos ensures that will have further trips into this new world of Camerons.

Do you all really believe THAT many people are going to go back for this three hour flick? Beyond A/V nerds that is, I can't see Mom taking her girlfriends back for another visit or the teenagers heading in for another round. Just don't see the audience beyond the people that have already seen it.

Its like no matter how the movie does, some will keep finding ways to play it down

i don't see how you can say this is a smashing success at this point, though. that's a bit premature. it's going to need staying power here in the US to be considered a success due to the massive budget. a $77 million opening weekend isn't exactly all that thrilling considering this is essentially a summer blockbuster that was released at Christmas.

I've seen the movie and was severely underwhelmed. Based on my experience (including the fact they were 20 people in my Friday night showing) it doesn't seem like it's going to be a huge hit for the next few weeks.
