Roy Edward Disney, here in 2007, "helped to guide the studio to a new golden age of animation," the Walt Disney Co. says.
Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- Roy Edward Disney, the nephew of Walt Disney, died Wednesday after a bout with stomach cancer, according to a Walt Disney Co. spokesman.
Disney "played a key role in the revitalization of the Walt Disney Co. and Disney's animation legacy," the company said.
He died in a Newport Beach, California, hospital at the age of 79.
His father -- Roy O. Disney -- co-founded the Disney entertainment business with Walt Disney in 1923.
Roy E. Disney's 56-year association with the company culminated in 2003 when he stepped down as vice chairman of Disney's board and chairman of the Disney Studio's Animation Department. He kept the title director emeritus and consultant in recent years, the company said.
"As head of Disney Animation, Disney helped to guide the studio to a new golden age of animation with an unprecedented string of artistic and box office successes that included 'The Little Mermaid,' 'Beauty and the Beast,' 'Aladdin' and 'The Lion King,' " the company said.
A private funeral service and cremation are planned, the company said. His ashes will be scattered at sea, it said.

Awww man
Roy was such a passionate advocate for the Disney brand and the Disney name, stressing quality and innovation in animation and services as well as not sullying the legacy his father and uncle built.
RIP Roy.

Yeah I'm not one who gets into "Show Biz Politics" like many here but I knew this man's name and face. I also knew that he seemed to care a great deal about Disney and what he thought the name should stand for.
RIP Roy E Disney.

This is a real punch in the gut. I'm old enough to remember the sadness when Walt died. Roy carried on the Disney name and traditions well. RIP

Sad.
I honestly feel this is the guy who kept Eisner in check during his time and prevented the company from going too far off track from his uncle's ideals. It seems, PIXAR aside, that Disney's quality has started to lack since his departure.

James Stewart's excellent Disney War details Eisner's reign so thoroughly, it's downright frightening. He paints Eisner almost as a Shakespearean figure rather than just a dictator. People seem to only remember him as "the guy who almost brought Disney down". They NEVER seem to remember he was also "the guy who raised Disney up from the dumps". But that's not why I brought this up: Roy was referred to as "The Idiot Nephew" within Eisner's circles, as downplay and trivialize Roy's influence in the company. Roy was not a fan of many of Eisner's machinations, the most egregious of which being the ABC Victoria's Secret lingerie runway show which he felt was not suited to be associated with Disney, and also championed animation in a time where Eisner poo-pooed it. Most people realize it was Katzenberg who REALLY brought Disney animation back, not Eisner who was altogether ambivalent about it. When it started becoming huge blockbusters with Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, etc. Eisner suddenly realized he had a commodity in feature animation and started cranking them out every year and pushing Katzenberg out. The quality dropped precipitously. While all this was happening, Roy was seeking to maintain levels of quality and sophistication inside Disney Animation, especially with his work on Fantasia 2000 (his pet project). He fought against closing the 2D animation studios. He loathed the Direct-to-DVD cheapquels that were hallmarks of the Eisner era.
Disney meant more than his family name, it was a commitment to quality, innovation, and values. His legacy will live on with current Disney creative management.
I disagree. Disney's been on a creative upswing since Eisner's removal.

I'm a big Disney nerd, I'm there all the time. I knew how much Roy tried to keep things as Walt would have wanted them, and I thought that was very cool.

Re: Roy E. Disney has passed away
Roy was always a thorn in the side of the corporate management, and thank God for it! He understood that looking back was essential to moving forward, so he worked hard to promote products and events that glorified the vaults and archives of the company. He understood the evergreen potential for ALL Disney product, and new that it was what made Disney different than any other film studio in the world. He stood up for quality, vision, and long term growth, not quick profits. Above all else he was an honorable and humble man who contributed generously to his local community. It breaks my heart that there is no longer a single person toiling at the company that bares the Disney name. In a way, it is with Roy, that the Walt Disney legacy truely dies.
Also, I believe he died the same day as his uncle Walt (EDIT: one day after).
