I don't know how accurate this article is, but the Tuhoy's attorneys are claiming Michael was paid from the movie. https://www.commercialappeal.com/sto...p/70599665007/ Michael also acknowledged the conservatorship in a 2011 book that he wrote.

So, living in harmony for 20 years....gets married and suddenly there's money missing/not given and issues with the conservatorship?? Coincidence?

There is some kind of disconnect happening. Is anyone under the impression that when a movie is "based on a true story" that the people who lived the true story get rich from it? If you are the subject of a move there are ancillary opportunities to make money, but the movie studios don't throw millions of dollars at you.

I posted something similar elsewhere. The movie was based on THE BOOK, so the author got paid and I'm sure they did too (they claim around $14k each), but we all know that they are pretty low on the payout pole for films. Plus, the Tuohy's were already pretty dang wealthy and Oher made over 30 million during his career so there is something else at play here (like maybe the wife like I posted earlier).

I read where the Tuohy's made over $200 million when they sold their restaurant business, so I wonder (like you do) if someone has gotten in Oher's ear about how he's the guy from The Blind Side, but the Tuohy's are 10 times richer than him.

Aside from the movie, Oher did have a pretty decent NFL career. He’s not exactly destitute.

Re: The Blind Side - Sandra Bullock

Or maybe he blew some of that money and this lawsuit is the way to get some money back?

Coincidentally, “The Payout Pole” is what I nicknamed my junk in college! :eyebrow:

Re: The Blind Side - Sandra Bullock

This was in my Google News stories today

Alcon Entertainment co-founders and co-CEOs Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove defended the project, and also revealed the monetary sum the four members of the Tuohy family: father Sean, mother Leigh-Anne, daughter Collins and son SJ, along with Oher made. Both producers of the movie, Johnson and Kosove explained in a statement obtained by People Magazine that the family, including Oher, made roughly $767,000 in total payments.

The deal "was consistent with the marketplace at that time for the rights of relatively unknown individuals," the statement detailed. "Therefore, it did not include significant payouts in the event of the film’s success."

Re: The Blind Side - Sandra Bullock

What does that even mean? That each member of the family made that much, or that was the total payout?

GoldenJCJ 08-27-23 11:06 AM

Re: The Blind Side - Sandra Bullock

Yeah, pointing out the total payout doesn’t tell us anything and almost makes it look like they’re trying to purposely skirt the issue.

$767,000 in total payouts to the group of five. If it had been $767K per person, then the word each would have been inserted before the word made.

Yeah, pointing out the total payout doesn’t tell us anything and almost makes it look like they’re trying to purposely skirt the issue.
I have no idea what that comment is even supposed to mean. Skirt what issue, and in what way?

Questions have arisen about how much the real life people, whose lives the movie is based on, were compensated. This is the answer from the film's producers.

I thought the important part was that it was a statement of what they were paid upfront, and that there was no deal for compensation on the back end based on the film's potential profitability.

Here's a link to the story from NBC Today. The one I quoted was from FOX Business.
https://www.today.com/popculture/mov...hys-rcna101691

Previous reporting said that all five members of the family ended up with $140K each. This amount is consistent with that. (140 x 5 = 700)

Now, if anyone thinks getting paid less than a million dollars to be the story for a movie that made $300 million at the box office is a ripoff, they can think that, but there's the amount.

GoldenJCJ 08-27-23 01:16 PM

Re: The Blind Side - Sandra Bullock

My point was that stating the total payout doesn’t address whether there were any discrepancies in the individual payments.

That’s like saying between me and Bill Gates, we earned $500,000,100,000 total last year.

Decker 08-27-23 01:28 PM

Re: The Blind Side - Sandra Bullock

Plus it's really Oher's story. It's not like they would have made a movie about Collins if he were not a part of it.

The film's producers wouldn't have any idea how the money was divided up. The money was paid to the family as a unit for the family's story. Since everyone, including Oher, was saying Michael had been adopted by the Tuohys, he would have been part of the family.

I think the point to take away is that whether Oher was given an even share, which the Tuohys say he was, most of the money, or none of the money, That was the amount there was: $700K.

So now, I would wonder why a man who earned (by all reports) more than $30 million for playing in the NFL is bitching about his share of $700K from 15 years ago.

Little update on the case :

I know keep wishing the movie ended with Sandra Bullock, tears in her eyes and with a heavy Southern drawl, saying “Michael, if it’s okay with you, we’d like to adopt you….in the colloquial, non-legally-binding sort of way”.

Count Dooku 09-17-23 03:42 PM

Re: The Blind Side - Sandra Bullock

Whether they adopted him or not, whether they ever intended to adopt him or not, whether they led him to believe he had been adopted or not, has no bearing on the issue of whether they took advantage of him financially or not.

What is represented in a movie is not a legal document. I'm certain the film contains a legal disclaimer that some of the events have been fictionalized for dramatic purposes.

This about the money, so just stick to the facts regarding the money.

Did they keep money that was rightfully Oher's? Just prove that. Did they somehow take money from Oher? Then prove that.

This case is about financial records, what money there was, and where did it go. That's all that matters.

^You say that like it's a bad thing. If Mike missed some details because the Touhy's didn't make things clear either by legit accident or intentionally... then it's a good that his new wife, who he's been with for years, may be making him look back into the situation. Did the Touhy's rip him off? Probably not in a malicious way. But it's clear some things weren't made clear to him. So naturally one wonders what else wasn't made clear.

I will go back to my comment about probable poor financial planning...happens to a lot of people. Me when I was younger.

He will spend more than he will ever get on this if the reports are accurate.
