What? This film may have lots of issues but "bad CGI" wasn't one of them.

half the CGI had crappy depth and you can tell it was a green/blue screen. with the LA destruction seen they could have added more people. for 75% of the scene it seems like they are driving on empty streets with other cars in the background but no people running around scared. the few people parts seem like they were filmed in a parking lot like Lucas did the Mos Eisley reshoot
the NG channel Yellowstone Park eruption movie had a better eruption scene of the volcano. Emmerich reused some nuclear explosion scene
and not only was the cgi bad, emmerich took plots and scenes from old disaster movies

I thought this film had the best CGI of all the action films this year (well, below District 9)...the only awkward special effect scene was when John Cusack is running to get back into the airplane. It looked like he was running on some treadmill in front of a green screen.

I'm still trying to figure out how this TOTAL piece of SHIT actually has anyone defending it, no matter how insane the defender might be.
I know people in loony bins who would turn their nose up at this!
This MAY be worthy of a good MST3K workover, but apart from that ,you should be ashamed to say you seen it unless you went to make fun of it and got thrown out

The CGI was stellar to me, for the most part anyway. Jurassic Park is always fondly remembered but watching it a few months ago on DVD and a lot of the CGI isn't that great.

Re: 2012 (Emmerich, 2009) — The Reviews Thread
I finally saw this movie. Now maybe I had really low expectations after 10,000 B.C. but I really enjoyed 2012. It might be Roland Emmerich's best (or least annoying) movie.
There's not much to discuss about the plot or characters, so I'll just list some things I truly enjoyed:
1. The destruction scenes were phenomenal (particularly, Los Angeles going into the ocean)
2. The arks (very cool design)
3. Insane, pickle-eating Woody Harrelson (just awesome)
4. Oliver Platt and Chiwetel Ejiofor (both give surprisingly good performances)
5. The way Gordon is instantly forgotten by everyone (hilarious)
6. The little dog with the tongue sticking out the side of its mouth (turns out he's pretty badass)
7. And last but not least: GIRAFFES, RHINOS AND ELEPHANTS IN SPACE SUITS!!!
As far as complaints, I only have two:
1. Danny Glover seemed really off. When did he lose his acting chops? He seemed to be reciting lines like in a kindergarten play.
2. John Cusack and his family outrunning one disaster after another. After the third time, I just decided to ignore those scenes.

I saw this movie last month and I really enjoyed it. IMO, it's probably one of Roland Emmerich's best disaster movies and I think it edges ID4.
Special effects were freaking amazing and I thought John Cusack was actually good as the lead hero of this movie. There were some hokey elements to the film like the nutjob who recorded the video blog and said the end of the world was coming. I started to cringe a little everytime he appeared on screen. Also, I thought the whole thing with the Arks and the selection process was ridiculous. And I agree Danny Glover can't act for shit anymore. The Arnold impersonation was awful on that TV press conference.
I also thought this movie was pretty successful in adding a little human/emotional element to the story. I thought it was kinda sad to see Cusack's daughter crying as she witnessed California got straight to hell.
I would definitely re-visit this again on Blu-Ray for the visuals and audio.
