Not bad deal for $25 bucks for both. Kinda wish they had it as a blu-ray bundle as well.

Agree. Although depending on the quality of the transfer on blu-ray, I may opt for the DVD/VHS combo.

Does anyone know what the song is that plays with the title card that sounds like a Cars instrumental?

Wish they had a BD bundle as well.

Even though I don't own a VHS player, the coolness of the extra alone might be worth me picking up the DVD bundle.

Anyone else pick up the DVD/VHS bundle? It's been calling me since I first read about it and I finally pulled the trigger last night. I have no idea why since the VHS tape is going to stay shrinkwrapped anyway.

I was tempted for the bundle, but I bought the blu-ray... Superior picture/sound quality wins in the end.

I love this film, absolutely fantastic.

Re: The House of the Devil (Ti West, 2009) — with Tom Noonan and Mary Woronov

Watched the film with my girlfriend late last night. Loved every second of it and thought it was a better slow burn than Paranormal Activity (which made my top ten of 2009).

My girlfriend, who knew nothing about the film going into it, asked me about fifteen minutes in: "When did this movie come out? The late eighties?" Felt kinda bad telling her that the film was released just a few months ago, but it shows that West did a great job putting the film together. I think it did a better job replicating the time frame and genre it was going for to a T rather than say Grindhouse.

I really enjoyed this film, but I wish the third act wasn't so rushed.

Re: The House of the Devil (Ti West, 2009) — with Tom Noonan and Mary Woronov

Watched the Blu-Ray last night on a perfect night as we were getting hammered with over a foot of snow.

Instantly one of my favorite modern horror films, loved everything about it. I knew nothing about it going in except that it was filmed like a retro-80s movie. The lead girl was adorable, Tom Noonan was excellent, great soundtrack. But what I loved the most is that as a horror movie, the film is very plausable. It is not outrageous for a struggling college student
Spoiler:
to overlook the seemingly unsafe situation of a weird babysitting job for the opportunity of making a lot of instant cash, plus living where I do in New Jersey, there was actually a large Satanic cult living in the Watchung Mountains not that far from me
.

Its been so long, it was just great seeing good well done horror again.

We were snowed in as well, which made it the perfect night for viewing this one. I really enjoyed it - very well done. Blind bought the VHS/DVD combo pack. I'll probably sell off the dvd and pick up the Blu-ray if/when the price comes down.

Re: The House of the Devil (Ti West, 2009) — with Tom Noonan and Mary Woronov

I watched the BD the other night with my gf. I love the film, but I still feel like West spent a bit too much time during the 3rd quarter of the film trying to build tension without much action. Granted, I love the atmosphere and aesthetics of the shots, but I was hoping we'd get a little more during bulk of the film other than
Spoiler:
her friend's face getting blown off.
But the ending is violent and raw and makes up for any lack of earlier action. All in all, it does play just like an 80's flick, slightly sagging middle and all. I eagerly anticipate his next project, and I still want to see The Roost.

The BD was very grainy, maybe only marginally better than the DVD. I wish I'd ordered the Amazon DVD/VHS bundle but I gotta go with resolution over all else. I'll delve into the extras this weekend.

This seems to be the only complaint people keep having with the movie & I couldn't disagree more with it. The best part of the entire movie and what makes it unique IMO is that basically a full hour of the movie
Spoiler:
is just the girl alone in the house with nothing happening
. And the entire reason that works is precisely because of
Spoiler:
the jarring violence of her friend being shot. The moment basically comes out of nowhere, there is no horror in the film at that point, so the violence in context is shocking & you are constantly waiting for more to come at any given point while the main character is in the house
. The cliche and typical thing to do would be to have more action and cheap scares.

Re: The House of the Devil (Ti West, 2009) — with Tom Noonan and Mary Woronov

I had seen this movie hyped and wasn't sure about it, but ended up blind-buying it because of the awesome DVD/VHS Combo from Amazon. Whoever came up with that idea deserves a bonus; I might have checked it out at some point in the future if it was just the DVD or Blu-ray, but I definitely wouldn't have bought it the week it came out at a higher price.

The VHS is awesome. Reminds me of when I was young and I'd walk in the rental store and check out all the horror covers. They did a great job with it and while I won't actually watch it, it will be a nice piece of memorabilia.

The movie itself was great. I agree with Sessa17 in that the reason this movie works is because we just see this girl going about seemingly normal behaviour not knowing what is looming in the background. I enjoyed the realism, the 80s throwbacks, the fact that Sam wasn't a typical worthless victim (she was cast perfectly and I hope to see more from the actress in the future), and the great suspense that built throughout. I thought the fast pace at the end was actually a nice touch from the long build-up.

Great movie and I'll probably try and watch it again during Halloween or late at night with friends. It's definitely a movie you could revisit and have fun with; not too long and very engaging.

Re: The House of the Devil (Ti West, 2009) — with Tom Noonan and Mary Woronov

I get what you're saying, Sessa, and I mostly agree. That bit of violence was jarring and quite shocking, and I do applaud West for not going the cliched route and ratcheting up the action, so to speak. But I felt like we needed a little something more. Nothing major, but maybe some minor scares - a quick glimpse of the demon hiding inside the house, Noonan or Woronov peeking in the window... But this is just a minor quibble. As a whole, I think it's one of the freshest horror films to come around in a long while. Ironic, since that freshness is a direct result of it being derivative of the 80's horror boon.

Re: The House of the Devil (Ti West, 2009) — with Tom Noonan and Mary Woronov

While I do have a Blu-Ray player, the whole kitsch factor of getting a new release movie on VHS in 2010 won me over, and I ordered the DVD/VHS combo (while planning on getting the Blu-Ray very soon). I enjoyed the flick quite a bit.

I thought it was excellent, as well. Although I will say, the satanic cult plot angle seemed much more 1970's than 1980's to me. Many more films from that decade that were oriented around satanism. If this was really going for an all-out 1980's vibe, it really should have been a slasher flick.

Re: The House of the Devil (Ti West, 2009) — with Tom Noonan and Mary Woronov

I agree on the 70s vibe with the devil angle. But the director was trying to capture the feeling of the 80s satanic cult paranoia.

Spoiler:

Maybe it was the combination of the old house and the dungeon that made it feel more 70s. The rest of the film though perfectly captured an authentic 80s feeling.

I too felt like it ended a bit abruptly. I thought with all the build up there was going to be a more crazy climax, like Audition or something. Still...

A very, very good horror film.

I've been staying away from purchasing new dvds but I'm tempted to buy the DVD/VHS package.
