The House of the Devil (Ti West, 2009) with Tom Noonan and Mary Woronov

HD TRAILER | IMDB | 30 October

Sam (Donahue) is a pretty college sophomore, so desperate to earn some cash for a deposit on an apartment that she accepts a babysitting job even after she finds out there is no baby. Mr. and Mrs. Ulman (cult actors Noonan and Woronov) are the older couple who lure Sam out to their creeky Victorian mansion deep in the woods, just in time for a total lunar eclipse. Megan (Gerwig) is Sam’s best friend, who gives her a ride out to the house, and reluctantly leaves her there despite suspecting that something is amiss. Victor (Bowen) at first seems like just a creepy guy lurking around the house, but quickly makes it clear that Sam will end this night in a bloody fight for her life….

Looks great. It even looks like a lost movie from 1981 without being too overt about it.

Hopefully this is better then Ti West's previous efforts.

Just watched the trailer on Apple. Looks very cool, love the production design and the fact that it stars Noonan and Woronov. Isn't this premiering on HDNet next month?

I was thinking the same thing - right down to the tagline. I'll be on the lookout for this one as part of next month's challenge.

Wonderful to see Mary Woronov working again. Though it's really sad that Paul Bartel died, this movie would have been even better if Paul and Mary Bland were in it.

DVR reminder (I can finally preset this recording as of this morning):

This will be airing on HDNet Movies on the eve of 10/28.

A new essay on the film has been posted on Slashfilm and contains this quote:

This is the best horror film of 2009.

Re: The House of the Devil (Ti West, 2009) with Tom Noonan and Mary Woronov

I realize that 2009 hasn't been a banner year for horror, but if this is the best of the year we're in trouble. I thought it was OK, but not nearly as good as some of the hype. I honestly thought "Paranormal Activity" was much better.

I did like the lead actress. She seemed to be channeling Jill Scholen from 1987.

I just stumbled over this on RT and it's at 85% with some really positive reviews.

It would be nice to have another good horror film amongst all the crap lately.

Re: The House of the Devil (Ti West, 2009) with Tom Noonan and Mary Woronov

Watched this tonight. West must have read my mind because he made a horror film that has all the sensibilities that I've hoped for. Everything from the title card to the hair-dos to the score come right out of the 80's. If I had any complaint it would be that the film takes a looonnggggg time to get to any kind of payoff, and by the time it finally does it ends quite abruptly. I would have liked a bit more eye candy to keep me as a viewer involved. The film does have some tension, but never enough to really keep me on the edge of my seat. I want to see it again, hopefully it gets a BD release shortly. It was certainly a refreshing film in comparison to most of the horror fans get these days.

I really liked this movie. Great 1980s feel/look without any cheesy "winks" to the 1980s.

Re: The House of the Devil (Ti West, 2009) with Tom Noonan and Mary Woronov

I was really annoyed with the 'set in the 80s' thing at first, but it was relatively subtle and I kind of forgot about it about 15 minutes in.

I really liked the slow pace of it and it built a great atmosphere, the ending was suitably scary and shocking without being too "modern" and gory gross out. I really enjoyed it.

Jawsome! Def picking it up. I really want to watch the film with a full-on DTS 5.1 surround track, not the puny 2.0 I got from cable TV.

Loved this. The slow burn build up only made my stomach tighten more with each moment of tension.

Saw this tonight and loved it. My favorite horror film of the year and one of the best of the decade. Will definitely be revisiting this on BD.

that long John Hughes moment where she's dancing around the house to herself listening to "One Thing Leads to Another" by The Fixx had me laughing hard

House Of The Devil brings sexy, VHS back for home viewing
by Nathan Rabin January 8, 2010

In one of the niftier, more creative publicity stunts in recent memory, the people behind the awesome early eighties-style shocker House Of The Devil are releasing one thousand limited edition VHS copies of the film, complete with retro clamshell packaging. Hopefully, one of these bad boys is waiting for me when I return to the office (today was, amazingly, a snow day where we got to work from home, one of the few advantages of the Chicago winter).

The unusual release is appropos given the film's loving recreation of the tone and tropes of early Reagan-era horror movies. You know a film has gotten all the details right when you're won over by the font in the opening credits.

Creative move keeping the retro vibe going with this -- to the clamshell packaging.
