Lionsgate? I'll wait in that case. I'm sure they'll unceremoniously dump it onto BD this fall.

Re: Solomon Kane
Finally got around to getting a R2 disc of this---very enjoyable movie! I liked the way they played it straight, with no "winking at the audience" attempts to give it modern "humor". Kind of grim, but not depressingly so, and I really bought into the character. Nice supporting cast and some great cinematography. As others have said, it was a great throwback to some of the 80s sword and sorcery movies, with a touch of LOTR films influences. With all the crap that gets released in the US, I don't understand why this hasn't been picked up. Does anyone know if this was successful enough that any sequels have been greenlighted?

Re: Solomon Kane
So still no word on a US release? Legal digital download (Itunes/Amazon)?... I really want to see this one.

Re: Solomon Kane
I didn't much care for it. There's some good actors in it, but the story is pretty routine and the climax features yet another uninvolving battle with a cartoon character. It definitely is a throwback to 80's sword and sorcery flicks, though. Apparently, 1600's England was plagued by marauding bands of orcs, who wandered freely as there was no king or army or any kind of central authority to oppose them.
Also, this film was edited by an ADD sufferer on a caffeine high. A quiet moment where a young woman watches Kane bathe had more quick cuts than a Bourne fight scene. |

Solomon Kane has been delayed so long, I wonder if it's still being touted as the first part in an epic trilogy. Three years on the shelf doesn't seem like an appropriate start to a beloved film series so we'll just have to wait and see. And while we're waiting, we've got a new trailer and some release dates for you. The film was recently screened at the San Diego Comic-Con, where it was announced that Solomon Kane will bow on VOD August 24 before hacking its way into a limited theatrical release on September 28. Max Von Sydow (The Exorcist), Pete Postlethwaite (The Omen remake), Rachel Hurd-Wood (Perfume: The Story of a Murderer), and Alice Krige (Silent Hill) all star alongside James Purefoy in the strange tale of a 16th Century Puritan tormented by his past evils. |
Re: Solomon Kane
Wow, years later and it's going to be released in theatres?

Not sure why they're even bothering, but, hey, great. I'll watch it on demand in Aug.

I saw that the trailer was on Flixter and assumed it was a remake. I guess I should watch it soon. :D |
Re: Solomon Kane
Thought about this after watching Silent Hill 2.
Why is this movie still gridlocked in the US? |

Re: Solomon Kane
So I did end up getting this. FUCK. I loved it. It had some alright CGI but goddamnit. I appreciate what they did w/ it.
Brutal as fuck. LOVED the beginning of this thing. Purefoy was awesome. I liked how it accepted that the world could be like this. That such mysticism could exist without being cheeky about it. I'd love to see more of Solomon Kane but doesn't sound like that'll happen. They fucking stretched that budget like crazy. Great BD we got here in the US. The commentary is fun to hear. Could have done w/o some of the "origins" type of nature a story can have but... it was fucking cool. I actually bought bought a book w/ all of the Kane stories. So I'm pretty excited to get into it. That and all the rest of Howard's material. |
Re: Solomon Kane
Welcome to 6 years ago, Snake. Glad you could join us. ;)
It's interesting that the writer/director didn't want to do an origin story and originally pitched one of Kane's African adventures as the plot of the movie. It was the studio that insisted on an origin, despite Howard never actually having written one for Solomon Kane. Only one of the poems made allusions to Kane's past as a leader of evil men. |
