I would have included Stormy Monday from 1988 a gritty little neo noir.

Glad to see Wanda and Dirty Pretty Things getting some talk. I still need to see most of the list.

Re: Top 25 British films of the last 25 years

Hopefully, next year's "London Boulevard" will be added to this list. One of my most anticipated films of 2010.

Also, I'm still pissed how "High Fidelity" made it to the big screen. Such a tremendous book. But changing the characters from English to American and the location from London to Chicago just changed the whole dynamics of the story and book for me. Here you had the great Stephen Frears directing. Why did they do this? And does anyone know if Nick Hornby had a say in it? Had I never read the book, I probably would have liked the film. But I think they royally fucked that whole thing up.

Re: Top 25 British films of the last 25 years

it may have been a critic's fave, but the non-inclusion of the documentary 'Of Time and the City'

jeesh, Peter Greenaway isn't loved in his home country...

what no 'Bend it Like Beckham' or 'Love, Actually' - more audience loved than what the critics thought.

Although I'm a huge fan of the movie, I had no idea that Touching the Void was a British film. (I guess because everything in it happens on a mountain in Peru, that just threw me off.)

Best British films ever?

Then you'd have to go back to early David Lean (GREAT EXPECTATIONS and OLIVER TWIST) and Michael Powell (THE RED SHOES) and Hammer horror (HORROR OF DRACULA) and even expats Richard Lester (A HARD DAY'S NIGHT) and Terry Gilliam (MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL). Not to mention the CARRY ON series...
The list isn't asking for the best British films of all time, it's asking for the best British films of the past 25 years.

Have you seen any of Terence Davies' work?

I think Layer Cake is a much better crime film and film in general over The Bank Job

Yeah...The Bank Job is ok. It's not surprising or suspenseful or whatever..hell it didn't even feel fresh. It's just..a...bank robbery with some simplistic and predictable turnout. I actually was kinda pissed that I bought it after hearing it sooooo lavishly praised here. Layer Cake is a much much better film. I cared about what was happening, I liked the X's crew, acting was better, story was well paced, etc etc. It's just a much better film. And of course...it's not a top 25 British film. Might be in the top 25 British Crime films (I see so little of that sub genre) for all I know.

I'm actually not a Mike Leigh fan at all, but I think Vera Drake would comfortably hold a spot on my personal list.

The previously mentioned The War Zone would as well.

Re: Top 25 British films of the last 25 years

Some choices there that i would agree with and some i wouldn't. Surprised some of the following were left out of the list (granted it is only 25).

Shallow Grave
Richard 3rd
Henry V / Hamlet (K. Brannagh)
Lock, Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels / Snatch
Gladiator
28 Days/Weeks Later
Eastern Promises
Bronson
The Damned United (Saw this recently and it is really excellent. Michael Sheen is fast becoming one to watch)
1984
The Company of Wolves
Greystoke
The Killing Fields
Hellraiser

I think my list would be:

1. Brazil
2. 24 Hour Party People
3. Withnail and I
4. Sexy Beast
5. In the Loop
6.The Damned United
7. Eastern Promises
8. Lock, Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels
9. Trainspotting
10. Hellraiser
11. Shaun of the Dead
12. Control
13. 28 Weeks Later
14. The Bank Job
15. In Bruges
16. Sid and Nancy
17. Bronson
18. The Killing Fields
19. Nil By Mouth
20. Local Hero
21. Gladiator
22. Slumdog Millionaire
23. This Is England
24. Naked
25. Sunshine

Well, in my eyes, Slumdog deserves the place (at least the Academy Awards committee agreed with me). I would definitely remove Dead Man's Shoes.

No mention of Elizabeth from anyone so far?

A second to whoever mentioned About a Boy as well. Great movie, although it does have an American director and was financed by Universal.
