Top 25 British films of the last 25 years

I haven't seen quite a few of these but I would have added A Fish Called Wanda, 28 Days Later, My Left Foot, The Crying Game, and Mona Lisa. Any others?

The Observer Film Quarterly polled more than 60 cinema experts - directors, screenwriters, actors, critics, and a few smart “outsiders” (novelists, musicians) to name their top 10 British films released in the last 25 years (ie since 1984). The results were combined to create a listing of the top 25 British Films Released in the last 25 years, topped with Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting.

Glad to see Sexy Beast on there, it def deserves it. I'd call it Kingsley's best role.

Rather see Hot Fuzz than SotD, but nice to see Wright getting some love either way.

I like how Trainspotting is being looked back on. I remember when it first came out, all I heard was comparisons to Pulp Fiction. Now it stands on it's own and is viewed as one of the best from the 90's.

Control and Slumdog Millionaire are easily not among the best British films of the past 25 years. I would have definitely removed those and added in A Fish Called Wanda and Mona Lisa.

Cool to see Shaun of The Dead up there. Also amazed at how many people would like it that much. Not that it's not that great, cuz I love the fuck out of it. Just amazed though at it even being in that list.

Re: Top 25 British films of the last 25 years

Best British film of the last 25 years:

THE BANK JOB (2008)

(and the only one I've seen that I'd include on such a list)

Best British films ever?

Then you'd have to go back to early David Lean (GREAT EXPECTATIONS and OLIVER TWIST) and Michael Powell (THE RED SHOES) and Hammer horror (HORROR OF DRACULA) and even expats Richard Lester (A HARD DAY'S NIGHT) and Terry Gilliam (MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL). Not to mention the CARRY ON series...

In Bruges should easily be at/near the top.

"The Bank Job" (2008) and "In Bruges" most definitely should be on this list. As should "Dirty Pretty Things" (IMO).

Surprised Michael Winterbottom didn't have something on the list.

Nice to see Distant Voices, Still Lives in there. Comrades should certainly make the top 25.

Re: Top 25 British films of the last 25 years

"Elizabeth" would have to be in the Top 5 for me.

Would "About a Boy" be considered a British film? I'd also consider that to be one of the very best.

I think so, I forgot about that one. I probably forgot about more, I threw that list together in a few minutes.

I do remember a few British newpapers and magazines saying "Best British film in years" when it came out, so I thought maybe it was.

I know, I've only seen Happy-Go-Lucky. I'll watch more soon, this thread has made me put a few on my list of films to watch over the next month.

Is this a British flick? It's directed Cuaron, a Mexican director (also a personal fav) and it's from Universal. Any details on that? yeah it's based in the UK but is it an actual British film?

Re: Top 25 British films of the last 25 years

Same thing with Brazil on Aegean's list. Directed by an American for an American studio...isn't it?

Sometimes I feel all alone in my dislike of Withnail & I. Maybe it just went over my head. I remember being extremely excited to see it after liking How to Get Ahead in Advertising and I just thought it was a dreary, miserable, unfunny slog.

Having just watched Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz back-to-back on Blu this weekend, I think I would just barely give the edge to Fuzz over Shaun, just because it's (and this is no sleight against Shaun) so much better directed. I am amazed at how much information is conveyed in Fuzz without the use of dialogue (a main example is the scene where Nicholas travels to Sandford for the first time; the way the signal on his cell phone vanishes during the montage is brilliant). I almost wish there was an isolated score/sound effect track on that Blu, I think it'd be fascinating to listen to.

I do agree with Supermallet, though: where is A Fish Called Wanda? If Shaun gets a spot, Wanda should also.

They both say "Country: United Kingdom" on their Wikipedia and IMDb pages, so that's what I went by. Whether those are accurate or not, I'm not too sure.

I too agree with you on that. I think Shaun is my fan fav one cuz it's just a huge ass love letter to Dawn of The Dead that you can't hate, but Fuzz is is a much better directed film...Wright grew a good chunk in his directing from Dead to Fuzz.
