Re: Disney Buys Marvel Entertainment
What if nothing about the content changed? If the movies were exactly the same as they were before, and you got them for the same price? Would you still turn them down because somewhere it might say Disney on it in fine print?

I buy my comic-book themed movies solely from ColumbiaHouse.com and they dont carry Disney because Disney are money grubbing pigs and refuse to let their films be carried by CH.
I guess I will just have to wait a few years and buy them used for like $5 bucks from now on.

I dont care about the name Disney. They can put it all over the box of they want its the price gouging that they do that irks me.

^Because I can get the 2-disk Special Editions of Spider Man 3, The Dark Knight, Wolverine, Iron Man , Incredible Hulk, etc. for less than $10 average.
I refuse to pay the exorbitant prices Disney will charge.

This of course makes me wonder the following. Who the hell are you? And what have you done to chris_sc77?

Spider-Man would require an extensive reworking. But the Hulk, Storm and Dr Doom rides could easily be re-themed.

Re: Disney Buys Marvel Entertainment
I worry that Disney will put pressure on the Marvel folks and their clout will prevent some of the classic storylines to be filmed because the deals with other studios will make it a tougher time for rights to revert back.

The Muppets were on life support before Disney stepped in. Since Disney took over we got nearly every season of the Muppet Show on DVD(all of Fraggle Rock) seen some toys return to store shelves and supposedly have an original film in the works. There is no excuse for the Muppet Wizard of Oz though which happened on Disney's watch. It's possible that was already in the works though during the acquisition(I'm not that knowledgeable on the matter).I think that property is doing better than before, but still isn't where it should be.

I am curious how this will affect theme parks. It is really interesting that Universal has a whole land dedicated to Marvel Comics. And Disney doesn't really have that many properties in their theme parks that wasn't developed in house and they are all relegated to MGM studios (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Muppets, Twilight Zone). So could there be competing rides in theme parks? Will Universal have to totally redo the Marvel Land into something else?
The fanboy in me would love an entire Marvel park, we know they certainly have the land for it down south.

Who the hell said I only watch R rated movies in theaters. I swear on my life i Never have. I go see PG-13 movies quite a bit if it is a film that suits a PG-13 rating. I tend to get more excited for R-rated films but last year. Dark Knight and Benjamin Button were 2 of my 3 favorite films of the year and I never for one second had a problem with their PG-13 ratings.
I would never expect one of these kinds of films to be Rated R. They dont need to be nor should they probably be. (Blade and Punisher are the only 2 mainstream Comic book heros that need R movies which they do indeed receive.)

no, it is good. the marvel animation department has been horrible. disney should turn that around quick. it's going to be a lot like the disney/pixar relationship. plus disney has the power and the money to get the the x-men franchise back from Fox which i heard they want to pursue. i can only imagine a disney size budget attached to an avengers film. wow!. seriously, if marvel studios was producing the avengers without serious backing, the budget would hurt the quality of what hulk, thor, iron man, and cap can really do on film. plus it would still be PG-13 since the POTC series were as will be prince of persia.

NOTE: Despite being a Disney licensee, Vado wishes it to be known that he has no inside knowledge of the Marvel acquisition, and that his remarks should be taken strictly as his own opinions based on news reports.
“Marvel is the big winner here. My opinion, Disney overpaid (and Disney never over pays for anything) so it is obvious that Disney sees a huge licensing bonanza from the characters well down the line. Marvel books will, at some point, gain a stronger bookstore distribution partner should they decide to have their books sold through Harper.
“However it is worth pointing out that Disney does very little actual publishing of its own and has made most of its money by licensing characters out to third parties. It could be, again strictly conjecture here, that Marvel will end up being reduced to a licensing company and that its publishing will be scaled back dramatically as emphasis is put on content like movies and video games and less emphasis on things like publishing. Disney published its own line of comics years ago and pulled out. More recently they cut ‘Disney Adventures’ magazine, a publication with sales in the hundreds of thousands. So, seriously, publishing is not a big part of the equation here. I would expect publishing to scale back somewhat.”
Vado continued, “Big loser here are Disney licensees who created original content for their books and the creators who created that content. As is standard with any licensing deal, Disney owns the material that is created under the license and can, if they choose, republish the content once those deals expire without compensating either the companies who paid for the content or the creators who created the original material. Again, this is not a Disney thing, it is fairly standard of all licensing deals. SLG published collections of the Marvel Comics’ ‘Bill & Ted’ comics and did not compensate them for the artwork.
“While I am certain that the licensing deals which are in place will continue to their conclusion I have to wonder how some of the people who have jumped into the Disney Comics business will feel about creating new content for the company knowing that it all could become property of Disney/Marvel Comics at some point. Likewise, all Disney comic book licensees now get to feel dumb knowing that the money they are giving Disney is now also going to their biggest competitor in the field. As I said above, though, publishing is not a big part of the core Disney business so it is possible that even more licensing opportunities might open up.
“I am not certain how much creator-owned material Marvel produces, but those deals will more than likely become a thing of the past.”
Vado continued, “Another big loser could be Diamond and the Direct Market. It's now possible that Disney/Marvel will scale back on production, possibly focusing on cutting the line down to what it can actually manage to put out on time and just doing enough publishing to keep the characters in the public eye. It is also possible that Disney/Marvel might do all of their own distribution. In this regard the deal can be a huge game changer for everyone. Seriously, anything can happen at this point.
“At minimum I would expect that Diamond Book Distribution will lose Marvel from its catalog as they will no doubt move to Harper.”

Re: Disney Buys Marvel Entertainment
It will be interesting to see how Marvel and Disney work together, especially with Marvel's existing deals with other studios. Unless Disney can buy back the X-Men and Fantastic Four rights from Fox, then they won't be able to take advantage of Marvel's library because Paramount is developing the whole Avengers slate.
I would love to see a Marvel/Pixar collaboration. I thought Pixar made one of the best comic book films with the Incredibles and would love to see what they could do with an existing property.
The properties that I am worried about the Disneyification are Fantastic Four and Runaways. FF wasn't done well at Fox and if it's done right with decent writing and casting, it could be a success. Runaways under Brian K Vaughan was one of the best original series started since 2000. I've given up on it since Whedon and whoever is writing it now took over. Its demographics overlap almost too well with Disney's target teen/tween audience and that's what worries me. There could be a faithful adaptation that includes the mature content or it could have the usual Hannah Montana, HSM cast in it.

on topic: I'm kinda worried as to how this affects the comics section and the overall quality of the characters in the films for the future. I was really happy to see Marvel as it's own thing.

As for when the contract expires I really wonder if Universal would have gone into a contract that expires on a major portion of their theme park. It doesn't seem to make sense that they would have invested so much with the possibility of the rug being pulled out from under them.
I REALLY hope that it won't end. I love those rides and while the Hulk and Dr. Doom would essentially stay the same and could be rebranded the Spiderman ride would totally be destroyed and that is an awesome ride.

Think about the possibilities now! Marvel/Disney...heroes and characters as one in new 2011 flicks!
1) The Amazing Spider-Clam
2) The Incredible Mouse
3) The X-Hens
Woo hoo fun!

Even though it would be cool I really would rather them keep things separate. I would rather see new creative properties come out of Pixar.
