Tom Welling as Duncan for the eventual TV spin-off?
It won’t feel like Highlander unless there’s some Queen music in it. But it could certainly make a decent franchise as long as Conner doesn’t become The One at the end. There’s nowhere to go from there, as seen by the weird “the immortals are actually aliens” bullshit in the sequel.

I think they should have Christopher Lambert play Ramirez. It won't happen, of course, because it's too obvious an idea.

I watched the first movie on Hulu or Netflix about a month ago. For the first time. All I remember from when I was a kid, is the bad guy being pretty damn scary.
I thought it still holds up. It had that pieced together plot and editing where it felt like they only filmed 85% of the movie. But that was pretty common in Cannon/Golan-Globus movies.

The truly successful remakes, like The Thing, are able to bring new things to the table that weren't available when the original was made. In the case of The Thing, that's an R-rating, darker sensibility, and improved special effects technology.

Part of me wishes they could chalk Highlander: The Source up to a bad dream and just reboot the franchise, but I honestly think a remake is probably a better option. I've missed HIghlander over the past decade or so...

So is Cavill gonna be the Kurgan? Cos I can't picture him as Connor, Duncan, or Ramirez.

I don't expect him to look like Christopher Lambert (you'd need Thomas Jane for that) but he seems too physically imposing. I know Bautista was cast as the Kurgan years ago, but he's far too slim now to pose a credible threat to Cavill. And even way back when, they seemed too evenly matched. That casting made more sense when Ryan Reynolds was attached as Connor MacLeod.

EXCLUSIVE: In the world of Highlander reboots, there can still only be one…and it’s a good one at that.
For the first time, Lionsgate will be launching sales at the AFM on their long-gestating fantasy reboot which has Henry Cavill aboard to star as the eponymous Scottish swordsman and John Wick filmmaker Chad Stahelski set to direct.
We hear this will be a big-budget proposition, north of $100M. Stahelski himself has previously talked about it as akin to John Wick with swords. The team is eyeing a 2024 start.
This will be welcome news for AFM buyers whose pool of pre-sale projects has been diminished by the ongoing strike.
The new movie will be based on the 1986 original, which starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown as immortal beings, hunting down one another and collecting more power. The time-jumping film — with its “There can be only one” tagline — spawned four sequels and three TV series including the popular USA series starring Adrian Paul. Queen memorably provided the soundtrack for the original movie.
Producing the reboot are Joshua Davis, Fast And The Furious producer Neal H. Moritz, Stahelski (thru his 87Eleven Entertainment production company) and Louise Rosner.
The current draft of the screenplay is by Mike Finch. The late Peter S. Davis, producer of the original Highlander, initiated development of the new film. Summit first acquired remake rights to the original in 2008.
Former Superman and The Witcher actor Cavill remains in high demand. Among movies in post are Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle and two Guy Ritchie projects, including WWII pic The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.
Stahelski has directed all four John Wick films, which have been a goldmine for Lionsgate, taking more than $1BN. He previously talked about the new Highlander as the first in a trilogy but we’ve not had word whether that’s still the case.
Cavill and Stahelski were attached and reported before the strike.
The arrival of the Highlander reboot is a shot in the arm for the AFM, whose business has been hampered by the SAG-AFTRA strike. This and Kevin Costner’s Horizon movies, which we told you this week would also be on sale, are the two biggest-budget prospects revealed for the market so far. A number of packages haven’t come together or aren’t being officially announced due to strike restrictions or anxiety over optics. Frankly, given the limitations posed by the strike, I’ve been surprised at the number of new or reworked projects that are on sale (many are shooting in Europe). There are still a handful of pre-sales packages for buyers to get their teeth into, even if more action may be done this market on completed and near-completed movies.

I'd prefer someone lesser-known and less handsome than Cavill. Lambert had that... well he sort of had a Neanderthal brow and everyday handsomeness that really sold that anyone walking among us could be immortal

I assume this will be Stahelski's new big project and probably won't go into full swing for another 6 months to 1 year depending on how long the strike takes. Unless the John Wick franchise takes a very long break like 4 years off, they might have to look for a new director. They haven't officially greenlit a JW5, but I don't think they can wait that long.

‘Highlander’: Dave Bautista to Play Villain Opposite Henry Cavill in Amazon MGM’s Remake
There can be only one? Wrong. Bautista will be the second actor to play the part of the raging immortal.

Dave Bautista is in final negotiations to play the villain in Amazon MGM’s remake of the 1980s cult classic Highlander.
The actor will join Henry Cavill and Russell Crowe in the action fantasy, which hails from Amazon MGM’s United Artists banner and is slated to get a theatrical release.
Chad Stahelski is directing the feature that is due to begin principal photography at the end of the September and shoot in locales in the UK as well as Hong Kong.
In the remake, Cavill is playing MacLeod while Crowe is Ramirez. Industry actress Marisa Abela also has a leading part.
Bautista will have the plum role of the immortal barbarian known as The Kurgen, who has been killing other immortals across the centuries in order to absorb their essence. Clancy Brown memorably played the character in the original movie.
Michael Finch wrote the script for the remake. Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt are producing alongside Neal H. Moritz, Stahelski’s 87Eleven Entertainment, Josh Davis of Davis Panzer Productions, and Louise Rosner.

I know most people will simply expect Bautista to play the Kurgan as a raging brute, but I hope they allow him to play the character as the more nuanced villain he was (back when he was originally named The Knight) in Gregory Widen's original spec script. Of course, add some of the fun that we had in the '80s movie as well. I'm thinking how the new remake of The Running Man seems to merge its source novel with its Schwarzenegger adaptation. A best of both worlds scenario.
Also, I guess this means Michael Fassbender playing a villain in this was merely a rumor? And had no clue Russell Crowe was cast as Ramirez. I hope he's been hitting the gym for what should be some fun and energetic sword duels.

Karen Gillan Joins Henry Cavill in ‘Highlander’ Remake (Exclusive)
August 21, 2025 10:03am
Karen Gillan has joined the sword-swinging cast of Highlander, Amazon MGM’s remake of the 1980s cult classic.
Henry Cavill is leading the cast that includes Russell Crowe, Dave Bautista, and Marisa Abela.
The action fantasy, which hails from Amazon MGM’s United Artists banner, is being directed by Chad Stahelski and is slated for a theatrical release. Principal photography is due to begin at the end of September.
The original Highlander, released in 1986, starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, a Medieval Scottish Highlander who discovers he is an immortal warrior. With the help of a swordsman named Ramirez, played by Sean Connery, the titular Highlander battles other immortals across the centuries, culminating in a modern battle in which, like the classic line of dialogue goes, “there can be only one.”
In the remake, Cavill is playing MacLeod while Crowe is Ramirez. Bautista is the savage warrior named The Kurgen while Industry actress Marisa Abela also has a leading role.
Gillan will play Heather, MacLeod’s mortal wife and the love of his life.
Michael Finch wrote the script for the remake. Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt are producing via United Artists, alongside Neal H. Moritz, Stahelski’s 87Eleven Entertainment, Josh Davis of Davis Panzer Productions and Louise Rosner.

The success of HIGHLANDER is, in my opinion, dependent on who the opponent is.
KURGAN then is, was and remains ... for me the highlight.
