cinematographer vs director of photography

I have no idea on how these two jobs differ from one another. Anyone knows the answer to this?

In almost all instances, they don't.

Some insist that the title of cinematographer only applies when the DP and camera operator are one in the same, although this is far from being uniformly the case. To most, cinematographer and director of photography are interchangeable terms.
