He may not have directed a movie since Curly Sue, but he wrote a ton of movies since then. Drillbit Taylor was his most recent. Granted, none of his post 80's work touched the greatness of what he did before, but I don't call that retired.

One of a kind ..... in the same way that only Hitchcock could make a Hitchcock movie, only John Hughes could make a John Hughes movie, as many would-be imitators quickly discovered.

OH man. This is sad. The man made some very enjoyable movies. None of them I'd call great but most would call very enjoyable and few I would call bad.
So, a very sincere RIP to Mr. Hughes.
Home Alone 2, Beethoven, and the Vacation movies were well watched by me as a child.
Then of course the Brat Pack movies when i was a teen.
Its a shame he never got to make more movies about Adults like She's Having a baby. I was hoping he'd come out of retirement to make more like that film.
Oh and I still need to see Uncle Buck and The Great Outdoors.

For anyone in their 30's who grew up in the 80's, this guy defined our generation: Breakfast Club, Ferris Buellars Day Off, Sixteen Candles, and Weird Science still hold up today for future teenagers.
RIP John

This news has really ruined my day. Growing up in the 80's, I really can't imagine my life without John Hughes' movies. I love them and rewatch many of them on a regular basis - he will truly be missed and he definitely had an influence on my life. R.I.P.
FUCK.

Any comments yet from the Brat Pack about Mr. Hughes' passing?
I'd like to hear Molly, Anthony Michael, Judd, Ally, Emilio, Andrew, Gedde, Matthew, Jon Cryer etc. pay their respects to the guy.

Molly Ringwald Pays Tribute to John Hughes
John Hughes made Molly Ringwald a teen star after casting her in his 1984 movie Sixteen Candles. After learning about the writer-director's death on Thursday, Ringwald shared fond words about her frequent collaborator.
"I was stunned and incredibly sad to hear about the death of John Hughes," Ringwald said in a statement. "He was and will always be such an important part of my life."
"He will be missed – by me and by everyone that he has touched," she added. "My heart and all my thoughts are with his family now."
Ringwald, who now stars in The Secret Life of the American Teenager, also had leading roles in Hughes's 1985 classic The Breakfast Club and 1986's Pretty in Pink, which he wrote.
Another actor Hughes made famous, Matthew Broderick, who starred in 1986's Ferris Bueller's Day Off, also shared his condolences with the director's family.
"I am truly shocked and saddened by the news about my old friend John Hughes," Broderick said in a statement. "He was a wonderful, very talented guy and my heart goes out to his family."

I am shocked. I will always love his films (most of them, anyway).
Why is it that I immediately hit this forum whenever big or sad news breaks?
