50's- ? (can't really stand 50's movies), maybe Cukor or Wilder?
60's- Kubrick
70's- Kubrick
80's- Woody Allen (Spielberg a close 2nd)
90's- P.T. Anderson (Tarantino a close 2nd)
00's- P.T. Anderson

yes b-movie greatness. and for 2nd picks of 60s and 70s i'd go for Jess Franco.

1940s/1950s - HITCHCOCK owned the 40s and 50s as far as I'm concerned. His output between 1940 and 1959 is like a greatest hits album.
1960s - KUBRICK - 2 of my top 10 favorite films during this time: 2001 and Dr. Strangelove.
1970s/1980s - TIE: SPIELBERG/CARPENTER. I can't choose. Jaws. Escape from New York. 3 Indiana Jones films. Halloween. Close Encounters. The Thing.
1990s - TARANTINO - Reservoir Dogs. Pulp Fiction. Jackie Brown. At least TWO of those defined 90s cinema, lol.
2000s - PETER JACKSON - Lord of the Rings. 'nuff said.

1950s: Robert Aldrich
1960s: Sergio Leone
1970s: Sam Peckinpah
1980s: Hayao Miyazaki
1990s: Quentin Tarantino
2000s: ? – no one yet
