Master & Commander sequel

About time. It's still the best sounding DVD I ever heard.

Crowe considering new 'Master & Commander' movie

By Simon Haydon, Associated Press

LONDON — Russell Crowe is in the early stages of negotiations to reprise the role of Jack Aubrey as a British sea captain in a new movie version from the Master & Commander series of novels.

Crowe told The Associated Press on Friday that a script based mostly on the eleventh novel of Patrick O'Brian's 20-novel series, The Reverse of the Medal, had been written, but that discussions were at a very early stage.

"There's still a long way to go," the New Zealand-born actor told AP at a cricket match between England and Australia in London. He said talks had been taking place with the owner of the rights to the novels.

The 44-year-old Crowe, who won a best actor Oscar for his starring role in Gladiator, is a keen cricket fan. His two cousins, Jeff and Martin, are former captains of the New Zealand national team. Jeff is now a senior cricket official and is in charge of the team of officials at the England-Australia match.

The AubreyMaturin novels consists of 20 books and one partly written before his death in 2000 by O'Brian, all set during the Napoleonic Wars.

The 2003 movie Master and Commander took material from several of the novels. The Reverse of the Medal, published in 1986, sees Aubrey in the Caribbean in his ship HMS Surprise, where he meets his illegitimate son Samuel Panda, a Catholic priest born from an illicit liaison.

Crowe gave no indication of when filming could start but said it was one of a number of projects he is considering.

I really liked Master and Commander too. I'd be happy to see a sequel.

Would love to see another, maybe if Robin Hood's a big hit some studio will throw money at the project...

Meh, wasn't a huge fan of M and C but i'd check the sequel out. It was a good AV experience though. I watch it when I first got my surround sound and it blew me away.

I loved M&C. One time I was watching it (I live in a quad town home) and had the sound up pretty loud (my immediate neighbor wasn't home). At the end of the movie I noticed police lights outside and they were looking all over the ground with flashlights. The next day I asked my neighbor what had happened. He said he heard "gunshots" and when he looked out he saw some kids throw "something" to the ground. Thinking it was a gun he called the police. I laughed to myself thinking he heard the cannon shots.:)

If they make another one I will be there with $$$ in hand.

Whuh? You didn't like the original but you'd give it's sequel a chance?? Now I know why you want "Jurassic Park" in IMDB's top 250.

I thought they had always planned on doing a series of films. Was it just a one-off thing?

I really liked M&C but the story just felt incomplete. I felt as if it never really ended well and the whole part of the story with the plan to light a barge as if it was them didn't work so that part of the story felt like a waste.

I can't wait. I never tire of Master & Commander but, as mentioned earlier in this thread, Peter Weir better be back as well. And I also want Paul Bettany to return.

Weir is in his 60s now. Considering how physical the first one was, one has to wonder if he's even up for it.

Then again, I looked up the storyline of this book, and it sounds like a lot of it takes place on land. That would kinda stink.

I think they were hoping to do more, but the first film wasn't that big of a financial success.

Great movie. The opening 20 minutes were fantastic. It would have been nice if they kept the enemy ship American rather than French though like in the book. I would see this for sure.

It wasn't really based on any one book. Weir took different moments from several books in the series. In fact, the book titled Master and Commander is mostly on land and all about the preparation of a voyage at sea and how they formed the crew. The Far Side of the World was a murder mystery.

If they follow the same pattern of the first movie, Weir will take the title and elements of the 11th book but mix it with numerous elements of the other books in the series.

I just hope this leads to a re-release of Master and Commander: The Far Side of the WOrld on BD that features all the extras from the collector's edition DVD.

It is kind of a mystery to me how a movie that was very expensive and didn't make all that much money could get a sequel. But I loved the books and the Master and Commander movie, so another movie would be a real treat.

Wait, I thought all this has been in the works and pretty much a done deal for a couple years? Why is it being presented as some new revelation?

I LOVED M&C and I've been looking forward to a sequel for some time now.

After I saw the first one and found out about all the books, I was hoping this would become a franchise, like the James Bond series, only good.

PLease PLease Please NOOOOOO.
I was bored nearly to death by the first one. Of course it doesnt help i usually dont like boat/ship movies but this was absolutely dreadful. I remember being the only one in the theater for this and the only part that wasnt boring as hell was the one action scene on the ship near the end. Other than that I hope and feel this will never get made.

Dude you don't have it? Damn, get it! That DVD has been considered an reference audio demo disc since it came out. DTS used to use it for demos. You won't find a better test of your sound system than the first 10 minutes of this movie.

Just re-watched M&C last week with my girlfriend. She hated it....but i love, love, love that movie. I would really like to see a continuation of these movies, although the premise of the next one does not sound too hot.

You know you could just ignore it, instead of hoping for it to never be made, at the cost of fans of the original

but I guess that is too sensible...

They'd almost have to combine elements from several novels like they did in the first one. Aubrey's bastard son was not a major plot point in that book. In the book, they said he was identical to his father, but black. It would be interesting to see a black version of Russell Crowe. Of course, the casting was not too faithful to the books in the earlier movie. Crowe was perfect as Aubrey, but Maturin is described in the books as having a slight build, dark hair, dark skin and not being very good looking.

Crowe and Bettany were good, but they are getting a little old to play those characters, especially if it were to become a franchise. I'd really like to see a reboot done with new actors - preferably based on "The Mauritius Command" which is the 4th book in the series (and the best IMO). I always thought the relationship between Aubrey and Maturin was similar to Kirk & Spock in Star Trek, so as long as I'm "fantasy producing", I'll say I think JJ Abrams would do a great job directing.

In any case, I'd like to see more of the novels made into movies, so I hope they do make this one.

If it was to become a franchise they wouldn't take 6+ years to do a sequel. The original cost $150 million and only did $90m in the US. Maybe it made money back with foreign, home video, etc, but it was hardly James Bond or Harry Potter.

Tim Rothman at Fox. We need to email this guy and start the ball rolling.
