If Peter Weir comes back, I'm in. Loved Master & Commander (saw it a few times in the theatre and many times on disc since).

PLease PLease Please NOOOOOO.
I was bored nearly to death by the first one. Of course it doesnt help i usually dont like boat/ship movies but this was absolutely dreadful. I remember being the only one in the theater for this and the only part that wasnt boring as hell was the one action scene on the ship near the end. Other than that I hope and feel this will never get made.

Dude you don't have it? Damn, get it! That DVD has been considered an reference audio demo disc since it came out. DTS used to use it for demos. You won't find a better test of your sound system than the first 10 minutes of this movie.

Just re-watched M&C last week with my girlfriend. She hated it....but i love, love, love that movie. I would really like to see a continuation of these movies, although the premise of the next one does not sound too hot.

Crowe and Bettany were good, but they are getting a little old to play those characters, especially if it were to become a franchise. I'd really like to see a reboot done with new actors - preferably based on "The Mauritius Command" which is the 4th book in the series (and the best IMO). I always thought the relationship between Aubrey and Maturin was similar to Kirk & Spock in Star Trek, so as long as I'm "fantasy producing", I'll say I think JJ Abrams would do a great job directing.
In any case, I'd like to see more of the novels made into movies, so I hope they do make this one.

If it was to become a franchise they wouldn't take 6+ years to do a sequel. The original cost $150 million and only did $90m in the US. Maybe it made money back with foreign, home video, etc, but it was hardly James Bond or Harry Potter.

Master and Commander was one of the best period works ever done. It made over $200 million worldwide at the theaters. Russell Crowe is on board for more movies but we the fans have to help convince Fox. I just tweeted Mr. Crowe on who we need to contact and he gave me the name in this tweet, https://twitter.com/#!/russellcrowe/...90441766453248
Tim Rothman at Fox. We need to email this guy and start the ball rolling.
This article gives a way to tweet Fox and ask for it.

I found a page on Fox Studios where you can contact them. Its the closest to a contact to Rothman I can find.

Well I felt it needed to be resurrected just to point out that it apparently is not gonna happen at all. I wonder what happened since a couple of years ago there was talk of a sequel and the first film actually did pretty well. This twitter campaign confirms that it shall not happen at all.

I should check M&C out. But as for the sequel...you know what else will never happen? William Goldman's Sea Kings. Would have starred post Bond Moore and Connery as Blackbeard and Bonnet.

EXCLUSIVE: 20th Century is looking to head back to the high seas as sources tell Deadline the studio is developing a new Master and Commander pic with A Monster Calls scribe Patrick Ness adapting the script. Insiders add it is still early days and no director or talent are attached at this time.
The 2004 adaptation Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, directed by Peter Weir, was set during the Napoleonic Wars and follows Capt. Jack Aubrey, played by Russell Crowe, a brash British captain who pushes his ship and crew to their limits in pursuit of a formidable French war vessel around South America. Paul Bettany also starred in the film, which went on to make more then $200 million worldwide and received 10 Oscar nominations for including one for Best Picture.
Since the original was part of a big book series, the idea was always to adapt other books in to films, but another film never got into position to move forward. Sources say this film would be based on the first book in the series, which shows a young Aubrey when he is given his first command and also explores how his friendship with his naval surgeon, Stephen Maturin (played by Bettany in the original) begins. Since this would be set in the early days of Aubrey, its also likely they would have new talent playing Aubrey and Maturin as well.
Ness was best known for penning the bestselling book series Chaos Walking (which he also adapted into a film for Lionsgate) until he transitioned into screenwriting starting with A Monster Calls. Since then his screenwriting star power has been on the rise, having just finished an adaptation of Lord of the Flies for Warner Bros and Luca Guadagnino.
He is repped by CAA, literary agent Michelle Kass and attorney Behr Abramson Levy.
